About Jason

I have been a student myself for 24 years. I have 3 BS degrees in Biology (zoology emphasis), Biotechnology and Chemistry. My doctorate is in Physiology. As a biologist I have over 23 years of practical experience. My training experience is very broad. I began in plant biology/plant pathology and have experience in the fields of neuroscience, cancer biology, and most recently, with my graduate work, diabetes and obesity. I have about 13 years of experience in the field of muscle biology. I also spent two years in the industry practicing clinical toxicology. As an undergraduate, I enjoyed tutoring, it really helped me with my own study, as well as gave me the chance to experience other viewpoints and meet new people.

My approach is in fundamental learning rather than rote memorization. My tutoring methodology would focus on schematic models. This method dissects the pieces out and describes them in the simplest terms first, to build in complexity to a full working model over time. In my experience, these fundamental models are retained well, much more so than traditional learning methods. I am a firm believer in practiced experience, or learning by doing, creates an experience based learning process, technically termed experiential learning models. By applying learned experiences, students develop dynamic working models of their own construction. I feel this active learning process is superior to rote memorization. Since I have spent a lot of my professional life doing science, I have a lot of personal experiences to share that will aid in these exercises.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biostatistics

Statistics is a very important tool in Biology. Without it, we cannot determine differences in our experiments, for instance if we want to know if a drug improves a disease symptom. We use statistical parameters to describe data. For instance we can calculate the mean of a data set, sometimes called the average. We also can use a formula to calculate a number which describes the spread of the data around the mean, so called standard deviation. Using these parameters we can determine if two groups of data have different means, by employing tests of significance, such as Student's t-test. When comparing more than two groups use ANOVA. For data that is not normally distributed, I use non-parametric tests. For large data sets, computer programs are used to apply statistics, I have used Excel, MINITAB, StatView, GraphPad Prism, and JMP. As a biologist, I have published seven studies using statistics in peer reviewed journals.

Botany

I have taken four college level plant biology courses: Botany, Spring Flora, Mycology and Plant Physiology. I spent 6 years as a research lab technician in the field of Plant Physiology/Plant Pathology. I love plants.

Chess

I have played chess since the age of 8. In HS I was active in chess club. In college I didn't have as much time, but occasionally attended the Granite City Chess Club in our student union. I have continued to play sporadically on line. I am unranked, but I can teach the basics of the game to anyone.

Zoology

Courses that I took within zoology were: General Zoology, Invertebrate Zoology, Entomology, Fisheries Biology, Icthyology, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Mammology, and Wildlife Management. In the research lab the skills I learned in these courses, guided me in successfully completing hundreds of survival surgeries on mice. I hold a BS degree from St. Cloud State University in Biology with a Zoology emphasis.

Extremely Helpful — I am so grateful to Jason for the extra help he has given my daughter with college Biochemistry. He has help her to turn around her test scores dramatically. Jason had put in extra hours organizing and outlining her material outside of their tutor times in order to be more efficient in their time together. Right from the beginning he made it clear he wanted to be helpful to her and worth the time ...
