I have 3 years of experience tutoring students at both the high school and university levels. As a Graduate Student Instructor, I taught college students in statistics coursework through one-on-one office hours. During my undergraduate studies, I also tutored high school students in math and other STEM subjects. These experiences allow me to tailor my teaching approach to students with different backgrounds and levels of preparation.

I graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master's degree in Biostatistics, where I developed a strong foundation in statistics and data science. My graduate training includes both statistical theory and practical computing using R, Python, and C++. I have also received training in advanced topics such as Bayesian methods, clinical trial design, and machine learning.

My educational background across different countries has also shaped my teaching style. I completed my high school education in China and ranked among the top 0.5% of students in the national college entrance examination. Experiencing different education systems has given me a broader perspective on learning and teaching. My earlier education provided me with a strong quantitative foundation and problem-solving skills, while my graduate training strengthened my ability to communicate complex ideas clearly.

Throughout my tutoring experience, I have noticed that many students find maths and statistics challenging because these subjects are often presented as abstract formulas to memorize. My approach is to break down complex concepts into intuitive explanations and connect them with real-world applications. My goal is not only to help students improve their grades, but also to build their confidence in quantitative thinking. When students fully understand why a method works, they become more independent learners and better prepared for future academic and professional challenges. Please contact me on Wyzant if you need help. I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your goals.

Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I recently earned my M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan, with extensive training in both theoretical and applied statistics. My graduate coursework included advanced topics such as Bayesian statistics, stochastic processes, clinical trial design, survival analysis, and statistical modeling. I also have hands-on experience applying these methods to real-world clinical, genomic, and biomedical data using R and Python. I enjoy breaking down complex statistical concepts into clear, intuitive explanations and tailoring lessons to each student’s background and goals.
Data Science

Data Science

I earned my M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan through the Data Science track, with extensive training in statistics, programming, and data analysis. I have 6+ years of experience using R and Python for data analysis, statistical modeling, and research projects. My coursework also included machine learning, Bayesian statistics, statistical inference, and other advanced data science topics. I enjoy helping students connect statistical concepts with practical programming and data analysis skills, and can tailor lessons to their coursework or projects.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have a strong foundation in mathematics through my M.S. in Biostatistics and extensive experience working with quantitative problems. I enjoy breaking down mathematical concepts into simple, easy-to-understand steps and helping students build confidence with problem-solving. I can help students with core elementary math skills such as arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, basic geometry, and word problems. I’m happy to adjust my explanations and pace to each student’s level and learning style.
GMAT

GMAT

I scored 170/170 on GRE Quantitative Reasoning back in 2021. Since then, I have continued to work extensively with mathematics, statistics, and quantitative problem-solving through my M.S. in Biostatistics. I genuinely enjoy sharing the strategies and ways of thinking that helped me succeed, especially when I can help a student turn a problem that initially seems difficult into something straightforward. As a former test taker, I hope to share not just the answers, but the practical knowledge and experience that can make test preparation more effective and less stressful.

Expert statistician, patient, and great teaching ability

Owen is a great tutor!! I needed help in a graduate-level course in biostatistical theory. He came prepared, answered all my questions, and helped me connect the knowledge gaps that I had. He ensured I was understating concepts and was very patient when I was confused (which was often). But after my tutoring session I am feeling much more confident and feel equipped to practice more problems. I highly recommend him as a tutor!! Thank you!!!!
