I have taught and tutor in multiple setting, 1-on-1, group supplemental instruction, lecturing, recitation, hybrid and online classes.
When tutoring, I focus on meeting students at where they are and build on top of their understanding, a bottom up approach. This might get the student to the finish line, or it might not. But the student will have a solid foundation to progress further.
My experience is mainly with college students but I have volunteer time to coach high school math competition teams.
