Hi! My name is Monica, and I enjoy tutoring students in middle school, high school, and college. I graduated with honors from the University of Michigan—Dearborn and received a bachelor’s degree in French and Political Science. Following two years of teaching high school French, I also completed a Master of Arts degree in Teaching from Grand Canyon University. I have several years of experience as a professional educator, including substitute teaching and one-to-one tutoring on various platforms.

Excelling in my own studies, I was always eager to help other students improve, which led me to accept a position at my college tutoring center in my junior year. I continued volunteering as a tutor after college and eventually decided to start my career as a professional educator. I have tutored GED Prep, ESL/ELL, French, and College Essay Writing and I have worked with students of all ages.

My teaching method is rooted in the application of critical thinking skills and analytical reasoning. First, I will meet with you in a free consultation to talk about your goals. In your tutoring session, we will review the instructions for your assignment or question. Then, I will guide you through newer concepts with a combination of questioning and discussion. If you need clarification on a topic, I will explain it directly and check for your understanding. Presenting examples using outlines and graphic organizers and using “meta-language” to talk about your thought process are two examples of my techniques. I always encourage my students to ask questions and try to be specific about areas where they struggle. Ultimately, the goal is to master concepts and build skills so that you can continue practicing on your own between sessions.

I look forward to beginning our tutoring sessions! I am available after school and on Saturdays and prefer to meet with you at a library or a similar public place that is free of distractions. Please give 24-hour notice of any cancellation and we can promptly reschedule your session.

Proofreading

Proofreading

I specialize in editing and proofreading college and post-graduate papers. I am strict when it comes to grammar, because it can “make or break” your paper. I can explain grammar rules, mechanics, and usage to make it easier for you to improve in these areas overall. My approach is to allow students to make the necessary changes to their writing as I provide support. I will walk you through the grammar, pulling examples from your writing so you can recognize where mistakes have been made. Writing is a crucial skill to your studies, so learning to read your paper with an eye for grammar, sentence structure and punctuation is essential.

I have successfully tutored many students in all phases of the writing process. Students come to me with an essay's first draft. Beginning with a critique of the content, I continue providing tips for improving structure, grammar, and walk them through editing and proofreading. "Fine-tuning" to check for concise writing, word choice, sentence structure and spelling allows me to help the student produce their best work, using their own words.

My teacher education at the Master's level allowed me to learn the most effective and up-to-date methods of teaching reading and writing. I teach pre-writing using graphic organizers (thinking/concept maps are other names for those). To aid in the revising and editing process, I employ a technique called "scaffolding" to guide them through it. After highlighting areas to improve, I share suggestions through dialogue and questioning. The students make final decisions about how they want to edit their pieces; my job is to present some options and explain the reasoning behind them. I adapt my instruction to match students' skills and talents and to meet their particular needs in an assignment.

Understanding politics can be challenging; it involves many competing interests and sometimes flies in the face of logic. As a tutor, I can help you gain an understanding of key concepts by including real-world examples in my instruction. My background includes internships in state government and in a legal office in our nation's capital. I have taught courses in political science, world cultures and world history.
