Ever need someone to just sit with you and help reason out problems with assignments and/or writer's block? Good! This is what I like to do best.

With experience as a collegiate assistant for music, writing, and the physical and biological sciences, I am well enabled across various subjects to assist students' studying needs. I have been a Wyzant tutor for over 8 years.

I have helped bring essays to life in comparative literature, environmental sciences, philosophy, and health policy analysis. My training in English and literature courses started in middle school. The English language is brilliant and beautiful, and empowers students’ personal voices with increased proficiency. I have extensive proofreading experience since high school until present day. My goal is to strengthen critical thinking skills so that students can learn to think for themselves, becoming their own best critics.

Euclidean proofs and the foundations of the Cartesian algebraic methods were my Maths specialties in College. To be sure, I love calculus, but the rhythm and flow of simply finding the value of x is thrilling, showing the journey as important if not more than just finding an answer.

I have had some graduate training in Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Dr. John Snow (note: the British physician in 1875 who snuffed out cholera in Soho) is my hero and role-model. I love working through problems of probability and basic statistical tests to help outline data trends. My current day job is as an ophthlamic echographer (3 years board-certified) with an esteemed private vitreo-retinal surgery practice in the Royal Oak, MI area.

I am also a violinist with over 28 years of playing experience. I am constantly learning the discipline even though performances are rare these days. I love the sound of this instrument and am passionate on passing on good habits to the next generation of musicians.

Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I have been a steady Biblical student for most of my life as an active Orthodox Christian. All the same, my real education in the Bible began during my college years through Socratic-like essays. My sophomore essay was on the concept of obedience as presented in Deuteronomy, an assessment of Aquinas' Treatise on the Divine Nature with ties to Biblical theory. My Capstone Senior Thesis essay was about Psalm 51. I have recently found application for these studies as a Sunday School teacher, teaching 5th-6th grade studies for the past 3 years. I look forward most to helping anyone wanting to understand more about the stories and lessons of the Bible for the human condition.
Biology

Biology

In addition to extra biological electives in college, I recently attained a post-baccalaureate associates' of science in molecular biotechnology. I find biology fascinating, particularly in the realm of molecular genetics.
Classics

Classics

Classics was one of my minors in college, from which I graduated with a 3.56 GPA. I am well-versed in most classic literature of the Western tradition, ranging from Homer to Plato, Nietzche to Freud. George Eliot and St. Augustine are some of my favorite authors. I have also been trained in a little ancient Greek to study some of the more classic philosophers (Plato, Sophocles, Euripides, etc.), but am more familiar with the koine Greek dialect.
Ear Training

Ear Training

I have been a violinist for the last 21 years of my life. I was identified as having perfect pitch 20 years ago. I am currently teaching violin lessons in my spare time with an emphasis on passing down an internal understanding of rhythm and pitch relations. I studied with a professor of music in violin performance for 7 years at Hope College.
Handwriting

Handwriting

Spencerian Cursive was the predominant form of penmanship during the time of Abraham Lincoln. It represents a streamlined version of the Copperplate and Roundhand fonts of America's founding fathers, and was thought to be an essential mark of the well-educated in its time. I use it in all my letters today and receive occasional requests from friends for handwritten invitations or menu cards.
Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook

I have extensive experience over the last 10 years in the evolution of outlook in office settings (the law firm in DC that I was a secretary for used it to run their administrative operations). Outlook is the perfect one stop shop tool for emails, scheduling, and coordinating every day logistics. I love using it for planning and constantly find myself wanting to mentor others in its use for seamless scheduling.
Music History

Music History

I have been a violin student (thereby a music student) for 24 of my 27 years. I am told by many peers that I have had perfect pitch for most of that time. I started realizing this skill when I created my own adaptations of popular rock songs for string trios and quartets in high school and throughout college. As I went on to study scholarly history, I naturally gravitated toward music history as a hobby. I have studied Western music from Gregorian Chants to present-day music in various genres, and I am currently obtaining proficiency in Byzantine church music.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have been proofreading papers since mentoring my siblings while I was in middle school. Per the human condition, I'm very good at spotting inconsistencies in the papers and thoughts of others. My singular goal is the clarified expression of thoughts. As additional experience, I often proofread for an online nursing module located in North Carolina.
Reading

Reading

Reading is my top hobby. I was only into it theoretically until I joined my first book club in the 5th grade. The evaluation of literature there to understand stories, themes and people set me on a track where I would love reading permanently throughout the rest of my schooling, to the point where my undergrad program was based solely in reading and discussing primary literary sources. Knowledge does not come without comprehension, and to a degree every book is a challenging puzzle of code that must be interpreted by its reader. As a puzzle, therefore, every book can be "solved" in one way or another. As puzzle solving is my general approach in tutoring/mentoring, I can convey some tips and tricks to help the mind stay engaged even with the densest material.
Violin

Violin

I have over 21 years' experience in violin lessons and performance. I studied at a college level for performance for 7 years Hope College while still in grade school. Chamber Music and the occasional solo piece take up a special joy for me in some of my spare time. I have been giving lessons to some of my fellow churchgoers and have been encouraged to seek out more students. Music performance is second-nature to me and I am eager to pass that joy on to the next generation of musicians.
Writing

Writing

I have been in advanced writing classes since I was 13 years old. I am about as fluent as one can be in the English language - I hope to apply the love of that language to those wishing to improve on their long-term projects, papers, or simply their own self-expression.
