I'm James! I earned my bachelor's degree in biology and secondary education and earned my master's in environmental science. I completed my PhD in biology studying infectious disease ecology. I am passionate about science education and have a strong background in teaching life and environmental sciences across a broad range of learners from grade 5 up through upper-level college undergraduates.

My teaching career includes one year teaching junior high, five years teaching high school science, and 5 years teaching undergraduate college laboratories. During the time I taught junior high-level, I taught life and physical sciences (grades 5-8). While teaching high school, I taught classes across natural science including Biology 9, Environmental Science, Anatomy & Physiology, and AP Biology. While pursuing my PhD I have taught undergraduate labs in introductory biology and advanced ecology and parasitology labs.

I have always enjoyed sharing what I have learned with my students and helping them to better understand the world around them. During my lessons, I utilize visual aids, practical examples, and always try to make lessons meaningful and engaging to help students. My goal is to help students make connections to the real world and better understand topics in order to more fully appreciate how topics build on each other and relate to ideas outside those being covered, even when lessons are tough. I am always excited to help students out along their own educational path and advance in their scientific endeavors.

Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I recently completed my PhD in biology studying disease ecology. During this time, I built and validated statistical models of disease dynamics and transmission. I have experience using a variety of regression-based statistics, including generalized linear models, mixed effects models, and nonlinear least square models to analyze a wide variety of experimental designs and observational datasets in program R.
Ecology

Ecology

During my PhD, I investigated the effects of temperature variation on chytridiomycosis infections of amphibians. I used infection data to build and validate models of infection dynamics to predict individual and population transmission dynamics. I also investigated environmental predictors of amphibian thermal performance to look for taxonomic and evolutionary patterns.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

I completed my MS in environmental science. During my degree program, I took courses covering soil and glacial sciences, watershed analysis, and ecology. My research project investigated differences in gliding ability among southeast Asian arboreal geckos. I completed my PhD in ecology investigating effects of temperature on amphibian physiology and disease. I conducted analyses investigating environmental predictors of amphibian physiology derived from BioClim layers (e.g., precipitation and temperature range) and elevation databases.
Epidemiology

Epidemiology

The primary focus of my dissertation was the development and programming of disease models in Program R based on Metabolic Theory of Ecology, scaling disease dynamics from individuals to populations. I have experience using a variety of regression-based statistics, including generalized linear models, mixed effects models, and nonlinear least square models to analyze a wide variety of experimental designs and observational datasets. During my PhD work, I developed and parameterized both Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR)-style models and individual-based models (IBM) of infectious disease transmission.
Zoology

Zoology

During my master's I studied the gliding performance of arboreal geckos of southeast Asia. I quantified gliding metrics from 3D gliding trajectories for comparison with additional published species. During my PhD, I studied chytridiomycosis and thermal performance of amphibians. I quantified the metabolic rates (oxygen consumption) of several amphibian species and used metabolic theory-based models to quantify key metabolic parameters for cross-taxonomic comparison.
