About Jeanine

Bio

Before teaching I enjoyed using math, various computer languages, and other skills to work on the National Aerospace Plane (NASP) and the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) at Rocketdyne. Coming from a small town in the Midwest, which still has only one traffic light in the entire county, I never dreamed that I would be working on such spectacular projects. Using my B.S. in the aerospace industry made every launch exciting and was a very positive and memorable experience!

Since then, the joy of training students of all ages (5 to 50+) to realize their dreams has captured my heart. In the past 20 years, I have helped students with many subjects, mainly algebra, geometry and precalc, but also phonics, and college logic.

Because my students learn the tips needed to master the subject, some of my students have become tutors themselves. One student was very pleased to raise her college algebra score two whole grades, from a D to a B.

You CAN overcome the challenge before you. I would love the opportunity to help you hurdle that obstacle. The rewards are confidence in new abilities, knowledge of new subjects, joy in overcoming that obstacle that once held you back. Your success is my joy.

All Math is a logical puzzle. Understanding simple proven steps will help you gain the confidence you need.
Learning English and improving reading at any age is beneficial. Phonics games and smiles are my simple tools to help your child learn to enjoy reading.

Experience:
16 years teaching: most subjects to ALL grades, K-12, especially Science, Technology, English and Math (STEM) classes.
10 years tutoring: jr college, high school, middle school; math, adv. algebra, geometry, grammar, phonics, reading, baking, cooking

Education:
* BS degree in Computer Science from Michigan Technological University - May 1987
* Some graduate course work in Math, at MTU. 1987
* Intercultural Studies Certificate in Spanish from Mich. Tech. Univ. - May 1987

Bible Studies

Bible Studies

Since 1990, I have studied the bible extensively and read through it entirely nearly every year. Using tools such as concordances, study guides, Greek and Hebrew interlinear bibles and various versions helps us to gain deeper insight to the truths of the text. I have taught various topics of the bible to all ages. I can’t wait to learn more and help others learn as well. As the initial Regional Coordinator for the National Bible Bee, West Valley Division in 2009, I had the privilege of introducing students to bible memory and experienced the joy of advancing nine students to nationals in the first two years. Bible Memory can be fun and easy with the power of the Holy Spirit and the right methods. Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Psalm 119:11 NKJV I would be happy to take your questions, or learn more with you as we delve into the deep truths of God’s Word together.
Cooking

Cooking

I began cooking and baking when I was 8 years old. I began with cakes and cookies, always a hit. All through college and raising a family, I began to enjoy learning new recipes and altering them for different tastes and for variation. I advanced to various salsas, successful cheesecakes, and studied raw vegan cuisine. I have a broad range of cooking themes and years of experience in the kitchen. I recently catered a Brazilian themed graduation for 70 people. I never met a food I didn't like. Baking can be very tricky because of the chemistry of wet ingredients when mixed with dry ingredients. Measuring skills are important to learn and use for the success of the dish, very important for muffins, cakes, and breads. Conversions can be important. A lesson I had to use when making an American recipe in India. And the lesson I learned. Which spices should I pack for a trip? What spices are available in the area to which one travels? Low-fat substitutions can make a difference in healthy recipes. Let me show you some tips and tricks to slim down those high fat, high cholesterol recipes for healthier dining. Other substitutions add variety to the menu from the same recipe, increasing your own recipe repertoire. Let’s eat!
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I home-schooled and taught K-6 from 1995 until 2008. During that time, I taught all elementary subjects including reading, writing, arithmetic, science, spelling, bible, phonics, grammar, history and PE. For three years, I organized a co-op for several families and led science demonstrations for the elementary students. Creating individual curriculum and student assessments has been an integral part of the process. I also use fun games which can be played with siblings to reinforce phonics letter-sound pairing. My simple manipulatives increase math and critical thinking skills. I look forward to working with your son/daughter.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

What a joy it is to have taught math from 1995 until 2008 to elementary aged students. Effectively using manipulatives increased math and critical thinking skills for every student. I have the skills and can pass those skills on to your child.
GED

GED

I have taught Junior high and High school subjects from 2002 until 2014. Since 2012, I have mainly focused on tutoring middle, high school and college mathematics, while also offering other general subjects, including those on the GED.
Geometry

Geometry

As part of my bachelor's degree, I completed calculus, trig, and graduate level math courses. Having taught geometry to our sons (2006 to 2011), I have seen each master the subject in different ways. I have been tutoring all levels of math since 2002 increasing students grades and bringing smiles to replace frustration.
Logic

Logic

Logic is a basic requirement for all computer science majors at MTU. I have completed courses in this area as part of my undergraduate degree, taught basic logic at the high school level and tutored logic at the college level. We have covered formal logic, truth tables, existential and universal quantifiers and recognizing various fallacies.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have been teaching and tutoring preAlgebra, Algebra I and II since 2005. I have worked with students aged 14 to college-aged. My students have come from El Camino, Cleveland, Taft High Schools, Hale Middle School, home schools, as well as Pierce College. All of them have been pleased to significantly increase their understanding of the subjects and consequentially their grades.
Precalculus

Precalculus

While preparing for my BS degree in Computer Science from Mich. Tech. Univ., I completed several calculus, and other higher level math classes. These skills were useful to me at Rocketdyne where I worked on the Space Shuttle Main Engine, National AeroSpace Plane and other spectacular projects. Teaching various technologies to engineers prepared me for tutoring high level math to all students. Having taught/tutored college and high school math students since 2005, and having worked one-on-one with several students since then, has given me an appreciation for different learning styles.

a calming and patient teacher

Jeanine helped me with fractions and algebra 1. I am an adult going back to college for the first time in 20+ years and have always had a lot of anxiety with Math. She showed up to our first appointment with materials that I could take home and directed me to some helpful websites as well. During our instruction time she helped me through some tough problems and really gave me some new ideas on how to approach things. It was very productive and helpful! I left with a smile on my face when math usually makes me cry. Thank you, Jeanine - I am looking forward to more sessions (even though its math!!)

A Rock Star!

My daughter struggled with College Level Intermediate Algebra, dropping out of the class the first time she took it. Then she met with Jeanine, who she absolutely LOVED! Patient, funny, and caring was the approach that allowed my high functioning autistic daughter to earn a B. THANK YOU JEANINE!!

Awesome Tutor

Jeanine is a really good tutor! She is very patient, knowledgeable and always comes prepared. My daughter enjoys her sessions and actually looks forward to them. She knew exactly how to teach her the concepts she wasn't understanding in class so that she would grasp them better. Jeanine even went out of her way to accommodate us when my daughter needed help in studying for a test. It's a pleasure having Jeanine as a tutor for my daughter.
