Over the past 30 years I have taught students in tutoring and home schooling situations, the regular education classroom and in special education settings. Currently I am recently retired but still certified in Michigan to teach mathematics: Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry. Teaching middle school and high school math are what I like best. I have enjoyed teaching/tutoring a variety of other subjects including reading instruction, comprehension strategies and writing. Working individually with people is very rewarding. I find that it is equally important to both support a student with their academic subjects and to develop learning strategies that will assist them in being an independent learner. I also think learning should sometimes be fun! During my career, I have tried to create teacher-made materials that not only review the concepts but also motivate the student. I set high standards for my students but I likewise support them so that success is the most likely outcome. I love teaching and find it a most rewarding career.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra is a fascinating subject. Most students don't believe that it is found and used in every day life! The beauty of algebra is in its simplicity. Just learn and follow the rules of this sensible math, and you will move forward in its complexity. From solving equations to multiplying polynomials to figuring out quadratics, it is helpful to walk through this subject knowing that it can assist you in the mathematics of digging a swimming pool in your own backyard or in laying stones in your patio. Algebra is found everywhere in the world, and to teach it in conjunction with where it is present in nature or in man-made constructions helps to motivate the learner in his/her studies.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

As a former teacher, I have assisted several students in learning Algebra II, especially when it comes to preparing for the SAT's. Using the graphing calculator is a must when one is graphing equations, solving exponential and logarithmic functions, and graphing conic sections (circles, parabolas, ellipses and hyperbolas). I do believe in thinking outside of the box as I have worked with many different types of learners in the past!
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher in the state of Massachusetts in the areas of elementary education, special education, and mathematics. I taught in the public school system for thirty years. Recently I home-schooled an eight-year-old student in the area of reading and written language. But mostly my special education background in which I have taught anything and everything (!) has provided me with the experience needed to work with any student as I approach everyone as an individual. You can also see my experience based on my current and past tutoring employment with Wyznt.
Phonics

Phonics

As a former special education teacher I worked with students who had language based disabilities. Also currently I am homeschooling an eight year old who is having difficulty with the reading process. To work with a student who has reading difficulties, I have learned to assess where a student is in their phonics development and to plan accordingly. Instruction for phonics development involves phonological(the ability to separate words into syllables and sentences into words) and phonemic (the knowledge that words are composed of discrete sounds) awareness. Once a child has an understanding of these two concepts, it is possible to work on developing skills in reading concrete words. Some ways to do this is using rhymes which introduces students to word patterns. Other skills that come into play once these basic skills are introduced are fluency, high-frequency words and spelling. Once a child has a firm foundation in these skills, they will be able to progress well in their reading. With one student I am tutoring now, we have progressed through the skills of understanding what a syllable is, matching sounds to individual letters, and differentiating short vowel sounds. We have moved slowly so that the child's fluency, the area of greatest concern for this particular learner, shows progress. Lessons are maximized through the use of activities, games and hands-on manipulatives (letter tiles, bingo games, flashcards, and body movements like clapping out syllables). Every child is unique, but the basic skills of phonics to be mastered are the same. I believe that with well-developed lessons and patient repetition, success is possible for everyone.
SAT Math

SAT Math

The focus of preparing to take the SAT Math Exam is twofold: One must first learn and practice specific SAT test-taking strategies, and second, review and improv one's math skills in the areas of Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Data Analysis/Statistics and Probability. With the use of a spiraling format to practice, practice, practice! test questions as well as a positive, encouraging atmosphere geared towards each individual's learning style, I hope to increase your test scores and reduce any anxiety you might have about this college-entrance exam.
Writing

Writing

As an educator, I am very competent with the written word! I have written numerous reports and educational plans during my career as a teacher. I have also taught co-English at the middle and high school levels and assisted students with writing college essays and research papers. Furthermore, over the years I have written many Letters to the Editor that were printed in our local newspaper and am able to express myself efficiently and effectively in writing. After generating my initial ideas, I spend a lot of time in the editing and rewriting process to have a very successful piece of writing as the end product.

Great tutor!

Heidi is by far, the best teacher I have had! She is patient, kind, organized, thoughtful and is able to understand the thought processes of the students she works with. She uses a variety of modalities which was key for me. If you are looking for help in your studies, look no further! Heidi is the best!

She is an awesome tutor.

Well, this review is actually easy. Heidi has helped me greatly. I have learned more than ever before and feel very comfortable with learning math for the G.E.D. exam. She is kind, caring and very thorough. She is dedicated and goes way beyond teaching. She is always prepared and prompt. I am grateful for all she has done.

Absolutely incredible tutor!

I have found Heidi to be incredibly patient, wonderfully understanding but, mostly an incredibly talented tutor!! I have a 16 year old typically sullen, obstinate teenage boy that dislikes school (and math in particular). Heidi has not only managed to bond with him through her calm, caring demeanor, she has convinced him to work hard and reach his potential! Through her efforts I have seen him study, understand and now excel at his online Algebra course they are completing together. She obviously has the knowledge to teach - but more importantly, the temperament and experience to deal with just about any problem or personality! I know this sounds like a cliche' but she has truly been a life saver. I cannot recommend her strongly enough. And no, this is not a paid endorsement. Just an incredibly happy mother.

Great Job

She did a great job with my daughter. She received a B on her test after her tutor worked with her on math problems. Shows up on time and works well with shy kids.
