During that time, I had the opportunity to teach students with hearing and visual impairments, students with autism and behavioral challenges, as well as students with cognitive impairments, and learning disabilities.
With changes happening in Special Education, I found that I could help more students teaching in a General Education classroom. I was able to help students that needed special strategies, but didn't qualify for special education services. At my request, I was still able to have the students receiving special education services in my general education classroom.
Besides my under graduate classes for teaching mathematics, I also had training to teach math to students with special needs in my graduate classes. I received further training on teaching mathematics to elementary students through in-services. Through the use on hands-on manipulatives, special curriculum, mnemonic devices, colors, special materials, etc., students have the opportunity to learn mathW through a mode that best fits their learning style.
How to teach reading to elementary/middle school students were taught in both my under graduate and graduate classes. I have had many training sessions to learn how to diagnose reading levels and reading disabilities. In addition, I take the results of the testing and plan a program to fit the needs of individual students.
I have had extensive training in teaching reading to students with reading disabilities. Many years of teaching special needs students has taught me that each student is unique in their personality, learning style, and interests. I try to teach my students using their strengths, not their weaknesses.
