I'm a PhD statistician, dissertation coach, and academic editor, and I've been tutoring for over a decade. My students range widely in age and stage, from high schoolers in their first statistics class to college undergraduates, Master's students, and doctoral candidates (PhD and EdD) working through a dissertation. I hold a B.S. in aerospace from Middle Tennessee State University, an M.A. in higher education from the University of Alabama, and a Ph.D. in higher education and educational research from the University of Michigan. I am also IXL certified through Wyzant.

I started out tutoring classmates in my own graduate statistics courses, then worked as a private tutor while teaching the introductory research methods sequence in the School of Education at the University of Michigan during my PhD. Today I run an independent statistics and research consulting practice, serve as a methodologist and dissertation coach for clients across many disciplines, and sit on dissertation committees as lead methods advisor. I work in all statistical platforms daily (R, SPSS, SAS, Pandas, etc.), so I can meet you in whatever software your course or program requires, and I am comfortable with everything from intro coursework to regression, multilevel models, SEM, and the analysis behind a full dissertation.

I work one-on-one, and my approach is to connect statistics, probability, and writing to real problems so the material actually sticks rather than staying abstract. I will walk you through not just how to run an analysis, but how to read the output and write it up correctly. My goal is for you to understand the material well enough that you won't need me anymore, though I'm always here when you do. Please reach out with any questions you have. I look forward to working with you.

Approved Subjects

Data Analysis

Data Analysis

I am a researcher and education consultant with extensive experience analyzing complex datasets for universities, nonprofits, and government agencies. I provide support in R, Stata, SPSS, Excel, data visualization, dashboard creation, and statistical modeling. I have helped graduate students and professionals clean data, run analyses, interpret results, and translate findings into polished tables, figures, and reports. Whether you are a beginner or preparing results for a thesis or publication, I make the process clear and confidence-building.
Data Structures

Data Structures

I help students master core Data Structures concepts including linked lists, queues, stacks, trees, hash tables, graphs, recursion, and algorithm efficiency. My approach focuses on building conceptual understanding first, then applying it to real problems and coding exercises. I have supported students in computer science courses, interview preparation, and data-driven projects where efficient data structures matter. Whether you need help with homework, learning a new language, or preparing for exams, I break down complex topics in a clear, engaging way.
Machine Learning/ AI

Machine Learning/ AI

I support students and professionals in learning machine learning fundamentals, modeling techniques, and practical AI applications. My experience includes predictive analytics, classification, regression, clustering, and model evaluation using tools such as Python, R, and scikit-learn. I help learners understand not just how models work, but why they work, focusing on interpretation, assumptions, and real-world decision making. Whether you are completing a course, improving a project, or building skills for research or industry, I make complex concepts approachable and hands-on.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I help students craft compelling personal statements for college, graduate school, scholarships, and competitive fellowships. My approach focuses on clear storytelling, strong structure, and persuasive writing that highlights your strengths, goals, and voice. I have coached applicants across disciplines to turn rough drafts into polished, memorable essays that stand out. Whether you need brainstorming, organization, editing, or full revision support, I make the process clear, strategic, and stress-free.
Probability

Probability

Probability is where a lot of statistics students first get lost, so I like to slow down and build it from the ground up. I can help with the fundamentals, including sample spaces, conditional probability, Bayes' theorem, random variables, and expectation, then move through common distributions, the central limit theorem, and the probability behind the inferential tests you'll use later. I tie everything to concrete examples so the rules feel intuitive instead of arbitrary. Bring a homework set or just the shaky parts before a stats course, and we'll make it click.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I've spent years as an academic editor and dissertation coach, which means I read closely for the things that undermine good work: grammar and punctuation, awkward phrasing, inconsistent formatting, and citation errors. I proofread theses, dissertations, journal manuscripts, personal statements, and coursework, with a strong command of APA 7th edition. I can do a clean light-touch polish or a heavier line edit, and I'll explain the recurring issues so your next draft is stronger on its own. Send me what you've got and let me know your deadline.
R

R

R is one of the tools I use most in my own consulting work, and one of the most valuable things a grad student can pick up. I help with the basics, like data import and cleaning, the tidyverse, and writing functions, and move up to real analysis: regression and GLMs, mixed models, SEM, and clean visuals in ggplot2. I favor transparent, well-commented code over black-box shortcuts, so you can actually follow and reuse what we build. New to R or porting a whole dissertation analysis into it, either way we start where you are.
SPSS

SPSS

SPSS is where a lot of my dissertation students start, and it's a program I've used and taught for well over a decade. I've run the full graduate methods sequence for Master's and doctoral students, and I use SPSS regularly for client analyses, from t-tests and regression to multilevel models, SEM, factor analysis, reliability, and mediation and moderation with PROCESS. Just as important, I help you read the output and write it up correctly in APA format. Bring your dataset and your rubric and we'll get it done.
STATA

STATA

I have been working in STATA for over 8 years as a research assistant and statistician. I have also taught STATA for a two-course sequence research methods course to Master's and PhD students at the University of Michigan's School of Education. I have a vast array of experience in basic regression, multilevel modeling, SEM, quasi-experimental research, and time-series modeling.
Statistics

Statistics

I've taught and tutored statistics at every level for over a decade, from intro courses through advanced doctoral methods. Most students come to me stuck on something specific, whether that's hypothesis testing, regression, ANOVA, multilevel models, SEM, or interpreting software output, and they leave understanding what the numbers actually mean for their research question. I hold a PhD from the University of Michigan and work in Stata, R, and SPSS, so we can stay in whatever your course uses. Bring a class you're trying to pass or the analysis for your thesis, and we'll work it through together.
Tableau

Tableau

I help students and professionals learn Tableau for data visualization, analytics, and dashboard creation. My experience includes building interactive dashboards for research, higher education projects, and state-level reporting. I focus on clean, professional design and clear communication of results, while teaching skills like calculated fields, filters, parameters, and data blending. Whether you’re preparing a class project, report, or real-world dashboard, I make Tableau practical and easy to learn.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I guide students through every stage of the thesis and dissertation writing process, from developing research questions to refining final drafts. My support focuses on organization, clarity, and strong academic voice, grounded in APA 7th edition standards and scholarly rigor. I’ve helped graduate students across disciplines transform complex research into clear, persuasive writing that meets committee expectations. Whether you need structure, feedback, or editing, I make the process manageable and motivating.
Writing

Writing

Most of my writing students are academics and graduate students who can do the research but get stuck putting it on the page clearly. I've worked as a dissertation coach and academic editor for clients across many fields, and I serve on dissertation committees as lead methods advisor. I help with organization, argument, flow, and tone, plus the mechanics of scholarly writing and APA formatting, at the level of a whole chapter or a single stubborn paragraph. Bring me a draft and tell me where it feels off.

Amazing God-Send!

Matt was an absolute God-Send this semester! I was dreading my stats class and knew I needed help to get me through. Matt's passion for stats allowed him to explain things in ways that my professors couldn't or wouldn't. Not only was Matt affordable and knowledgeable, but he was patient, kind, efficient, and always willing to answer all of my questions about labs and my final project both in and outside of our meetings each week. He truly went above and beyond! 1,000% recommend!

Phenomenal teacher

Matt is so thorough and patient. My statistics class had thrown me for a loop, and I was very out of practice. After 1 session I had a better grasp of all concepts and had my math anxiety reduced. Best money I have spent during my graduate education.

Knowledgeable and very patient tutor.

I contacted Matt as I needed help with SPSS and statistical analysis. I am a doctoral student completing the final chapters of my dissertation. Matt is extremely knowledgeable and very patient. He is also very generous with his time and does not mind answering questions between tutoring sessions. I had contacted two other tutors prior to meeting Matt, and I did not get from them the help or quality of instruction I received from Matt. Not only is Matt helping me with the statistical analysis for my study, but he takes the time to explain and helps me to understand, which is extremely important. Thanks to Matt's help, Chapter 4 was approved. Thank you.
