About Elizabeth

Bio

I'm passionate about mathematics and the sciences and love teaching them to students. My philosophy about learning difficult subjects is that everyone has the ability to understand them; they just haven't had the opportunity to see it the way they need to in order to understand.

I can offer patience and creativity to help students of any grade level grasp difficult concepts and use higher level understanding to tackle mathematics problems.

I have 10 years of teaching and tutoring experience including small classroom lecture and one-on-one interaction. I was given a teaching award and have a supplemental instruction certification that helps me effectively cater to many different learning styles. I enjoy finding creative ways to provide new perspective to students struggling with the learning process.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I am very familiar with the entire high school math curriculum as I am the director of curriculum for my school's online sister school. We design and maintain material, including Algebra 2.
Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

I have my master's degree in chemistry. I have completed both organic chemistry I and II lectures and the associated labs and received the top score in my class both times. My research project during graduate school required the use of organic chemistry so I am experienced in the subject.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I am a certified supplemental instructor (SI) which was a rigorous, semester long certification process at the college level that taught how to teach any kind of topic. It covered how to teach to one or only a few students and also how to accommodate for up to large size classrooms. I used this certification to provide supplemental instruction for a large lecture physics course, where I held small help sessions several times a week. These were both lecture and question and answer based. The focus here was on teaching students how to approach their course material in an organized fashion that made sense to them individually and based on the subject matter. I also taught a physical chemistry course where conceptual understanding was very important and study skills played a key role. Much of that interaction was more about how to manage the task demanded from the course than the actual task.

Awesome tutor

I feel lucky to have Liz as a tutor for my daughter's pre-calculus course. I've seen that Liz has a thorough understanding of the subject and a much broader knowledge outside that immediate area of study. She was quick to assess my daughter's strengths and weaknesses in mathematics, and immediately built on the strengths while working through the those things my daughter had not yet understood clearly. Liz's education has given her a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts of the subjects she teaches and she has a gift for explaining those to others. She is giving my daughter the ability to work off of those fundamentals and tackle more complex problems. She has an engaging personality and immediately "connected" with my daughter. She is patient and encouraging, gives my daughter only what she needs to solve problems herself, and is working at giving her the skills she needs to solve problems on her own. Liz has a broad range of knowledge and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her in any area she's studied.

Down to earth smarty!

Liz is very knowledgeable and able to bring it down to a level that is understandable/ relatable. My first time to have outside tutoring for my son - could not be happier. Wonderful teacher - so glad we used her!

Great, Very Flexible

Liz tutored my son in pre-cal and physics. He was very behind. She listened to all my concerns and we talked through what would work best. She was so flexible on meeting times and was able to meet with him for as long as he needed each time. He could not have passed without her.

Efficient

Elizabeth V. was able to immediately find the weak areas in my son's understanding of High School physics. By concentrating on the basics she was able to catch him up quickly.

Great tutor!

My son enjoyed working with Elizabeth. He felt like he learned a lot from just a 1 hour session. We plan to use her for Algebra 2 tutoring again in the near future.

Excellent!

From the minute my daughter began working with Elizabeth, we knew it was a perfect fit for learning. Elizabeth is wonderfully patient and personable. Chemistry had been really challenging for my daughter but immediately Elizabeth had her feeling comfortable and safe. My daughter was safe to ask questions and safe to make mistakes. My daughter's understanding of chemistry and self-confidence with the subject grew with each passing session. As a teacher myself, I know that really getting to know the student and thereby understanding how each really learns is critical to student success. Elizabeth proved to be gifted at both! We have found Wyzant in general very user friendly, and my daughter feels she has been blessed to have Elizabeth in her life.

A joy to work with

From the very first contact we knew Liz LOVES to teach math! That passion not only translates into being able to impart to the student's knowledge, it also drives her to work with the parent to schedule and follow up. Our goal is to increase our son's SAT scores in order to be accepted either in the Air Force Academy or Texas A&M. Although that goal is still 3 months out and thus far we have had only one appointment, we know that with Liz's tutoring he will accomplish such.

Wonderful!

I couldn't have asked for a better tutor for my son. Liz was very responsive with our last minute requests and willing to work around our crazy schedules. She was so patient with my son and even taught him studying techniques that his own teachers hadn't. I would highly recommend Liz and look forward to him working with her again.
