I have worked for several years within the Special Education department for William S. Hart Union High School District, as an instructional assistant. Before coming to California, I worked with the Ferndale Public School District in Ferndale, Michigan, where I have held many positions. I have been a media specialist, a one-on-one instructional assistant, a technologist, a science coordinator and a substitute teacher for all grades from Pre-K to Adult Education. I have had informal training with a multi-sensory method for teaching students with dyslexia how to process the written language called Orton-Gillingham. I hold a Master's Degree in special education, a Bachelors Degree in interdisciplinary studies, and an Associates Degree in instructional technology.

I have a child who has dyslexia so I not only know how to help these students manipulate the brain in order to read, I also have an idea how parents feel who are faced with this disorder in their children. I have also worked with students who have many special needs. I have been a adaptive skills trainer and a behaviorist for a local company who work with students who are autistic.

ADHD

ADHD

Through my schooling and teaching experiences I have learned that students with ADD and ADHD learn differently from other students. I have found that a multi-sensory approach to teaching allows the student to stay on task for longer periods of time. Modifying the lesson will allow the students to have frequent breaks to help with their attention spans. I have worked for several years within the Special Education department for William S. Hart Union High School District, as an instructional assistant.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have worked with several students who have dyslexia including my own child. I even wrote an action research paper on the subject for my Master's Degree within Special Education. I know different ways to teach students who have this learning disability.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked within a 1st-2nd grade classroom as a teacher's assistant and have taught small group lessons. I have taught reading enrichment for 1st-3rd graders during summer school. I also now possess a Master's in Special Education. in which I also have some early education classes. I am a co-leader for a Brownie troop and help with two other youth groups.
Handwriting

Handwriting

I hold a Master's Degree in special education. I have had many years' experience helping students with their writing skills. I have taught summer reading enrichment programs which also focused on students' writing skills. This program was designed for 1st through 3rd grade students who needed a little extra support over the summer. I have taught my students not only how to improve their printing but also worked on their handwriting. I teach my students who are dyslexic to write in cursive because if they use cursive writing then they are less likely to write their letters backwards or transpose a b for a d.

Amazing tutor, great for my dyslexic daughter!

Barbara is truly a find! Our 7-year old daughter is dyslexic and helping her to read has been a difficult task for us. Her school does not provide special assistance, so we have been on our own in trying to help her read, with limited success. Barbara has many years experience with dyslexia issues, and she is one of the few people we have found who truly understands what difficulties she faces. This has been our 4th session, but already we have seen marked improvement. Barbara listens carefully to both the parent's concerns and the student's feelings as well. She comes up with her own lesson plan, but will also incorporate reading material, workbooks, etc. that we bring in. With Barbara, our daughter feels more comfortable trying to sound out new words, and reads without pressure or anxiety. Our daughter was initially very reluctant to have a tutor, but since our first meeting, she says she is glad to have Barbara in her life. She is warm, kind and makes the learning process enjoyable. We live in Moorpark but it has been well worth our while to drive weekly to Valencia to meet with Barbara. She is always prompt, communicates clearly and ready to get to work right away. Highly recommended!

Thank you!

Barbara is a kind, patient, and thoughtful tutor. She takes the time to make sure her student understands the subject. Barbara tries different techniques, is knowledgeable about her students abilities and background. Barbara is knowledgeable in teaching students with disabilities and was able to recommend ideas and thoughts outside of the subject being tutored. She is an awesome tutor! We are very happy with her services!!
