Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

Having taught math in a Rochester middle school (now retired), for 12 years, has given me a formal foundation of math instruction. In addition, I have tutored math students from Kdgn-8th grade, as well as adult. I am knowledgeable about learning styles, and have used a multitude of strategies to customize each lesson to meet the needs of each students, including tactile and kinesthetic tools, a multitude of varied activities, with a little fun infused so the students gains confidence as his/her understanding increases.

English

I am a retired middle school teacher who taught English and Language Arts during my teaching career. In addition, I have a Master's Degree in Reading and Language Arts, which gives me a strong foundation on which to base my lessons.

ESL/ESOL

Using my educational background, teaching experience, and tutoring experience, I have been successful at tutoring ESL students. Using a wide variety of resources, I hone in on a student's strengths and weaknesses, and focus on the areas which need the most attention. I am currently working with one ESL student (Italian speaking). My lessons are customized to the needs of the student.

Prealgebra

As a retired middle school teacher, I have both taught and tutored 6th grade math, pre-algebra, and algebra to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. I have 12 years teaching experience, and have also tutored 12-15 students in math from 1st grade through adult. Lessons are customized to meet the needs of your child and his learning style. I do this in a very supportive and caring atmosphere. In addition, besides my Master's Degree which gives me a strong foundation, I taught middle school English to 7th graders, and Language Arts to 6th graders. I have also tutored 1st grade through 8th grade in English and Language Arts. My knowledge and experiences make me a perfect fit for your request!

Reading

I am an excellent fit for students who need help in reading and writing. My educational background includes a Master's Degree in Reading and Language Arts from Oakland University.

In addition, I also taught English and Language Arts during my teaching career in middle school. One of my specialties is "Reading in the Content Areas", which was the subject of the project to earn my Master's Degree. Furthermore, I have also tutored many students in reading, writing, public speaking, and am currently working with an adult student in ESL.

These qualifications make me a perfect choice as a tutor!

Study Skills

Study Skills is a broad term within the context of tutoring. Some factors which need to be addressed are organizational skills, note-taking, and having proper supplies. In addition, study skills also includes time management, proper nutrition and sleep patterns, and ways to control attitude and anxiety. Finally, students need to know test-taking strategies for the different formats of tests, i.e., multiple choice, short answer, etc. As a retired middle school educator, I incorporated these techniques into my teaching during the school year and also address these categories with students I tutor.

TOEFL

I have the educational background, teaching experience, and tutoring experience to tutor students in ESL and TOEFL. Having a Master's Degree in Reading and Language Arts, and having taught English for 12 years in a public school gives me the educational foundation and teaching strategies to support student learning. In addition, I have tutored ESL students, and have an understanding of the resources used to study for the TOEFL, as well as the skills necessary to help make students successful.
