I am currently an 8th grade science teacher, the content area lead for my district, and part of a team that provides professional development to educators across Oakland County through Oakland Schools. My bachelor’s degree is in elementary education with a major in science, and I am one class shy of a minor in math. Math was originally my major, but a professor convinced me to switch toward the end of my program. I also hold a master’s degree in education, an educational leadership certification, and a driver education certification.
I have been teaching for more than 25 years across grades K-8, with the exception of 1st and 4th grade, and I have tutored in after-school, church volunteer, online, and private settings for family and friends. In both teaching and tutoring, I have found the “I do, we do, you do” approach to be the most effective for most students: I model a skill, practice it alongside the student, and then let them try it independently. I also create acronyms to help students remember the steps of a process, giving them a reliable strategy they can apply to any topic.
