About James

I taught as an assistant professor of physics in Hawaii for seven years and now teach astronomy in Lansing. I am a shodan in aikido with Aikido Schools of Ueshiba. I tutored chemistry and physics back in college.
I enjoy teaching math, physics, and martial arts because they are fun and useful. I see these areas as tools of positive change and progress for people's lives.

I am a PhD in physics. That requires one to learn a lot of math. I chose that path.
I watch Numberphile because I find math fun.

In my PhD in physics I studied, specifically, cosmic ray detection which is a branch of astro-particle physics.
I have taught astronomy and physics for most of my life.

I am a shodan in Aikido and have exposure/practice in numerous other systems. A first degree black belt takes time and focus; still, it is just the beginning. I am patient and practical as a sensei. I have taught many students in Michigan and Hawaii and can get someone started on the long path of martial arts.

I am confident that you can learn that which you desire to make a part of you. I will help as I can. Contact me and we can make progress as schedules permit.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I have taken university calculus, differential equations, Fourier series, complex analysis, group theory, differential geometry, linear algebra, and game theory. As a physicist I am familiar with the application of these math techniques and others.
