Tutor in Social Studies (Government, History, and Economics)

Hi everyone! My name is Katie, and I am currently enrolled at Central Michigan University in their Secondary Education Program. I have made both the Presidents and Deans list twice out of my five semesters here at Central Michigan. My specific program focuses on subjects within the social studies department. The subjects that are included in my degree are: history (both world and U.S. history, political science (civics and U.S. government,) geography, and economics (macroeconomics, microeconomics, and international economics).
In the past, I have tutored my peers in all subjects within the social studies department. My favorite subject(s) within this area of study is U.S. history and government. My methodology is the “work through it” method. If someone I am tutoring is stuck, I will always try to guide them through the question, so they are able to come up with an answer by pulling in their prior knowledge. I also believe pulling in topics that students already have a basic knowledge about can make the new ideas and lessons much less intimidating because they already have some prior knowledge.
I have mostly worked with students in grades 8-12 in terms of tutoring. However, I am currently a substitute teacher and I teach grades K-12. I am also a Varsity and middle school level coach and through my experience, I have worked with middle and high school athletes, which has allowed me to understand their thought processes and determine what will allow these students to succeed. I also have gained the understanding that every student is different and have learned to adapt my plans in order to best suit my students and athletes. I also believe that feedback from students is important, if something I am doing is not working, I want to be the first to know! Students and parents alike know what they are best and how will learn best! So, I believe regular feedback is imperative!
