I am a working film editor and filmmaker in Michigan and have been cutting professionally since 2014. I have edited six feature films and two television series, and I am the lead editor on NightHawkInLight, a YouTube channel with 2.5 million subscribers. I am a working film editor and filmmaker in Michigan and have been cutting professionally since 2014. I have edited six feature films and two television series, and I am the lead editor on NightHawkInLight, a YouTube channel with 2.5 million subscribers. I attended Madison Media Institute and was previously an Apple Certified Pro, though most of what I teach comes from paid work rather than a classroom.
I started in Final Cut, moved to Premiere, and now work primarily in DaVinci Resolve, so I know what editing habits are universal. Resolve has hundreds of features and most of them will never touch your work, so I focus on the small set of shortcuts and techniques I use every day. I can help you set up and organize your project, troubleshoot a technical issue, clean up poor footage or audio, or work through a scene you are stuck on.
I am also a VFX artist. On the features I have cut I handled everything from keying to object removal to CG creatures. With After Effects I focus on compositions, keyframes, and the handful of effects that cover most real work.
I also know the production side, which means less to fix in post. I have broken down scripts, hired cast and crew, worked with SAG, and taken finished films through distribution. My teaching experience comes out of that work. Running a set and a post team means explaining a technical idea clearly enough that someone can go do it, and I have done that with everyone from PAs to department heads. I have also taught junior editors how to organize a project, sync footage, and build an assembly.
I teach one on one and online using screen share, so we work inside your actual project rather than a sample file. Let me know what you are stuck on or trying to learn and I will help get you there. I am also glad to give notes on a rough cut or a script if that is what you need. I teach high school students, college film majors, and adults learning to edit for their own channel or business, and I look forward to working with you.
