I am a junior at MSU currently pursuing a degree in Political Theory. I have always enjoyed reading and writing, but when preparing for the SAT and AP tests, I realized that a more test specific skillset was required. I learned how to apply my skills to the specific types of questions that the tests wanted me to answer, and did very well. More recently, I used the same approach to study for the LSAT, scoring a 180 (the maximum score) my first time taking the test. I did so without using any expensive test prep services, solely relying on the official test database and a few free websites.
As I have prepared myself for tests, I have often been asked to help peers and younger siblings prepare themselves for AP tests, the SAT, and the LSAT. I have provided help to other test takers in the form of guidance about study approaches and useful resources, as well as in one-on-one tutoring sessions. As someone who places a lot of importance in my own test performance, knowing that I have helped other people increase their own scores has been very fulfilling to me.
I believe that to excel at standardized testing, students must understand patterns in the test questions, but not get so bogged down in question classification that it interferes with the student’s preexisting ability to reason through a problem. Additionally, I have learned from experience that an often overlooked but important area to develop is mental stamina and preparedness. Therefore, I aim to help students achieve higher scores by identifying the types of questions that they need to approve on, helping them see the specific logic needed to answer those questions, and then practicing applying that logic as they will need to on test day.
