I have a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in English composition from Purdue University Northwest. I taught first-year composition classes at Purdue first as a graduate student, then after I graduated as lecturer. Before teaching my own classes at the university, I worked at the university's writing center for 5 years.
I have been a high school English teacher for 10 years, and for all 10 of those years I have taught Dual Credit Composition (among many other writing and literature courses). My master's degree was focused on how to teach college writing, and that is what I have specialized in.
My five years of teaching writing at the college level, 10 years of teaching high school English, and 3 years of private tutoring mean I have a great deal of experience in preparing students for college-level writing. I also have assigned the Common Application essay for many years, and have had multiple students use the essays they wrote for my class in their applications, and got into their top college choices.
I have a knack for creating materials specialized to individual student needs, such as tutorials, guides, practice work, etc. Students can use those materials beyond the tutoring session.
Students have described me as calm, down to earth, compassionate, and easy to talk to. My favorite part of my job is working with students, and I especially like to have 1:1 time with students. That kind of individualized help, even in a classroom setting, is key to substantial student improvement.
