I have retired from full-time teaching and now enjoy the freedom to work with individuals and help them meet their goals.

So, if you need help with your academic work, I would love to help you discover how best you learn! If you want to work on your writing or your voice, I enjoy coaching students. I have had success in working with people on their public speaking skills too.

I am certified to teach English and have five years experience teaching writing and research to undergraduate students at UCSB. My dissertation has been published as a book---that process was an experience!! As a debate and speech coach, with theatre experience, I am happy to work with those who want to improve their skills in written or spoken English.

I have been a Choral Conductor and voice teacher for over 25 years. I have three degrees in Music: a B.M.E. in Choral Music Education, with a Vocal Performance minor, a M.M. in Choral Conducting, and a Ph.D. in Historical Musicology. I am prepared to help with any academic music subject (except composition!) or with anyone who wants to improve their enjoyment of music by learning more!

Whether you're looking to improve academic skills and grades or searching for a meaningful way to enjoy music, I am happy to help you. Please contact me and tell me your goals!

Approved Subjects

General Music

General Music

I have employed elements of the Kodaly and Dalcroze methods in my teaching, especially the use of solfege, ear skills, and creative movement. I would love the opportunity to work with individuals who want to improve their ability to read music. I would also enjoy working with children, because a background in Kodaly and Dalcroze education is so beneficial for them as they mature as instrumental or vocal musicians.
Music History

Music History

I have a Ph.D. in Historical Musicology from the Univ of California at Santa Barbara. I have taught Music Appreciation to community college and UC undergraduates. I have published papers and a book based on the dissertation. I have written program notes for concerts.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I debated in high school and college and then coached debate and taught public speaking in high schools. I also have theatre experience. Many could benefit from working with a speech coach. What is more important than stating your ideas as clearly as possible, with the gravitas or passion required by the situation. Everyone could benefit from some coaching, including a couple candidates for President!!
Reading

Reading

I added English to my California teaching credential in 1990, which included a one-term seminar in the teaching of reading.
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

Sight singing is often one of the most difficult courses music majors must take. Being able to read music at sight is also a skill most singers struggle with. I use solfege and elements of the Kodaly method in teaching Sight singing and I have had great success. Learning to read music better is a skill you will appreciate!
Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

I have a B.M.E. in Choral Music Education with a minor in Vocal Performance. I have a M.M. in Choral Conducting. I have conducted church choirs, community choirs, and school choirs. I have also taught private voice lessons. I am currently the Music Director at a Lansing church.
