My primary areas of study are philosophy and the psychology of human learning. My teaching style reflects my interests; brute memorization accomplishes little genuine understanding. Instead, my approach encourages pupils to think through, question, and process information. That sort of questioning promotes understand of the subject. Facts are useless without systematization. It’s only when facts are processed that they produce something of real benefit to a student. By trying to answer fundamental questions within a field - by applying their reasoning abilities to the material at hand - students create understanding.

I have been teaching chess for almost a decade. My experience has included coaching and directing after-school programs, instructing and managing summer-camps, and teaching one-on-one private lessons. Several teams I coached won state competitions; others were runners up. Two teams I worked with placed top ten in the nation; one student became the national champion for his grade level. I was vice president of Benedictine University’s philosophy club. As vice president, I often helped students to better understand their assigned readings, to study for exams, and to polish their papers.

It is my goal to help students succeed in their current subjects of study and improve their capabilities as learners. The abilities to read and listen well, to process information logically, and to ask the right questions are key to academic success. Instructors notice these sorts of qualities in their students.

If you have questions or are interested in setting up a trial meeting, I encourage you to contact me. I respond quickly to all messages.

Logic

Logic

I have achieved high marks in multiple university level logic courses and have read through a variety of additional logic books on my own out of personal interest. Also have an interest in the history of logic, and this has led to the study of different systems of logic, from Aristotilean categorical logic to Fregian predicate calculus, from Kripke’s modal logic to Zadeh’s fuzzy logic. I have helped many students who were having a hard time in their logic course succeed and start getting top grades on their exams.

Knowledgeable and kind tutor

Lance taught me concepts my own professor couldn't make me understand. My only regret is not hearing about Lance's tutoring services sooner. I am sure I would have a high A, if not a 100, in my logic class would I have started sooner. He was so patient and non-judgmental. He taught me concepts, guided me through examples, and let me try the rest on my own with his direction and guidance anytime I needed. We finished up early and instead of hanging up he began a new concept to guarantee I got the most out of my session. 10/10 recommend.

Great chess teacher!

Lance is an outstanding chess teacher! He has a great way of explaining strategies clearly and encouraging critical thinking. He’s patient, reliable, and knows how to keep lessons both fun and challenging. My child has grown more confident, focused, and excited about chess thanks to his guidance. One of the best tutors I have ever had

Lance tutored me in American Philosophy, a subject which I found extremely difficult. I had multiple lessons with him, and every single lesson I have come away having learned something new, or understood the concepts more clearly. Lance is especially adept at helping with the process of writing philosophy papers. He is attentive, knowledgeable, and considerate. I would highly recommend him as a tutor in the subject of Philosophy.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Lance and I went over Descartes' Discourse on Method. He did a great job explaining the text and helping me form a compelling argument for my paper. He brought in insights and aspects of the text that I overlooked. Also, I wasn't sure how to structure a philosophical argument, but he helped it make sense. I learned a lot and was very pleased with how I did on my paper!

Knowledgeable and thoughtful teacher

My son took more ten 10+ sessions with Lance throughout the summer. Lance has been very considerate in assessing what my son's development area from the first session. When I asked Lance to read a specific book together with my son, he gladly agreed to select any book I wanted. I appreciated his flexibility for my son. He seems to be very knowledgeable in coaching how to read and understand a book. He sometimes popped up some quiz for my son after reading a book together and provided honest feedback for me, which was helpful. Also my son sometimes got bored in reading due to lack of understanding the background of the book, he persistently allowed my son to spend sufficient time and figure out context himself. I recommend him as a good reading teacher for middle school students.

High quality Logic tutoring.

Lance is a highly skilled tutor and provided me an extremely helpful and valuable tutoring session. He was able to make me understand things much easier than my professor did. I fully intend to do more tutoring with him throughout the summer, I would highly recommend him.

Exceptional Tutor!

Lance worked with my college freshman to get him unstuck on a Philosophy essay that my son had labored on unsuccessfully for days. Lance was able to develop his understanding of the material, then help him to outline a framework for the essay. By the end of the session, my son felt ready to tackle the essay with newfound confidence. Lance is truly amazing!
