Hey there, I'm Jamie! I have a PhD in cultural studies and I've spent the last decade teaching college courses about popular culture and helping students with their writing.
My first priority in any tutoring relationship is to figure out what the goals of my client are. This usually means working on a specific objective, at least at first. This can be anything from “help me figure out how to write this paper” to “help me pass this class,” but setting initial goals helps establish a relationship and lets my client see if my tutoring style will work for them.
I have experience in a broad range of topics, but my core competencies revolve around understanding and using language in everyday life. As a tutor, I use that knowledge to help my students figure out what they want to say and how to say it. Whether that’s providing test preparation, helping students with specific assignments or courses, or doing a deep dive into the nuts and bolts of a larger writing project, I enjoy helping my students see how they can use language skills to get what they want.
I have exceptionally strong skills in English writing and comprehension, and I’ve spent most of my career helping people improve their communication and critical thinking skills. This includes the mechanics of writing, how to improve flow and manage authorial tone, and how to write for a particular audience. I teach students both how to write a sentence, and how to craft a message.
I am mainly interested in tutoring online students, given the low density of students in my area. I have several years of experience working with international students from Asia and Africa, and my background in cultural studies means that I am very good at understanding how background and context shape the ways that people communicate. I am more than amenable to working with students from a variety of time zones and ESL students. If you have more questions for me or you’d like to schedule a lesson, please contact me, I’d love to hear from you!
