Bio

Mathematics and Music go together! I have 17 years of mathematics tutoring experience; and in addition, I have been a harp and violin teacher for 11 years. Simply put, being an educator is my speciality. Working with individuals to reach their potential is what I do best. I hope to work with you so you can experience the satisfaction of the "ah ha!" moment. My teaching philosophy is that quality teaching is founded upon knowing and understanding the student.

Simply put, being an educator is my speciality. Working with individuals to reach their potential is what I do best. I hope to work with you so you can experience the satisfaction of the "ah ha!" moment. My teaching philosophy is that quality teaching is founded upon knowing and understanding the student.

I have a Masters in Mathematics from University of Washington Seattle and double Majors in Mathematics and Conservation Biology from University of Wisconsin Madison. I have tutored extensively the following subjects: Algebra, Pre-calculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Calculus 3, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations.

As a musician, I am a Suzuki Music Educator. I studied harp pedagogy with Mary Kay Waddington, founder of the Suzuki Harp Method, at the Utah Suzuki Harp Institute and the American Suzuki Institute. I am a registered Suzuki teacher through the Suzuki Association of the Americas with accreditation in Harp, Violin, and Early Childhood Education. I advocate that being a musician is just as much a physical pursuit as well as an intellectual pursuit. Therefore, my teaching emphasizes the efficient use of the body’s biomechanics to produce a high calibre tone while avoiding injury.

I teach violin and harp at my home studio as well as Michigan Technological University. I am always pleased to get to know the varied students who register for harp lessons at Michigan Tech, from the engineering students who have never touched a harp to the seasoned performers. I even travelled to Boston to join my first Michigan Technological University harp student in the Massachusetts Harp Ensemble, performing in the Reagle Theatre’s production of A Little Bit of Ireland.

Prior to embarking on a master’s degree in pure mathematics, I double majored in Mathematics and Conservation Biology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Alongside my formal academic studies, music had such importance in my life that I chose to continue harp studies while at the university. I enrolled in advanced harp lessons through the UW-School of Music for all the years that I was at the university, as well as performed with the UW-Madison Harp Ensemble and the UW-Madison Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, I was honored to receive the Margaret Rupp Cooper Harp Scholarship.

I have presented solo recitals at the Keweenaw Heritage Center at St. Anne’s, appeared as guest artist several times with the Michigan Tech Choirs, performed with the Pine Mountain Music Festival Orchestra on occasions, and performed with the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra from 2007 to 2019.
