About Caitlin

Bio

I have been tutoring for over eight years in a variety of math and sciences as well as testing preparation for the ACT and SAT. Outside of tutoring I work as an outdoor educator, and I have worked as a substitute teacher as well as in a college preparatory program. I have been tutoring for over eight years in a variety of math and sciences as well as testing preparation for the ACT and SAT. Outside of tutoring I work as an outdoor educator, and I have worked as a substitute teacher as well as in a college preparatory program. I love tutoring students of any age, and I have experience teaching students from daycare all the way through senior programs.

During tutoring sessions, I focus on building a student’s understanding of the material one step at a time. With new material, I guide the student with questions such as “What is this problem asking you to do?” or “What is the first step you can do to help solve this problem?” We go through it step by step together, and I'll explain anything the student doesn't understand, making sure they understand it before we move on. Once we have done the first problem, I let them try it out for themselves on a new problem. If the student gets stuck, I give them pointers as to what they can look for to help them know what to do next. We will continue to do problems of the same type until I can see that the student is fully solving it on their own. I try to build confidence by helping them see what they do know and increase understanding by connecting the problem to similar problems they have successfully done before.

ACT English

ACT English

When tutoring ACT English, I will work through sample problems and practice tests with the student and go over each question. I will have them explain to me why they chose certain answers, and if they don’t understand, I will explain to them what makes the answer correct as well as why the other answers are incorrect. We will do multiple questions that cover the same concepts to help the students remember. We will also revisit these concepts later on to refresh their memory. We will also go over test taking strategies to help them efficiently and effectively complete the test.
ACT Math

I have tutored students anywhere from a last minute refresher course to weekly sessions for a few months to build or rebuild their math knowledge. I go over skills and topics students should know as well as some test taking skills to help them succeed. I use sample problems and practice tests to help them feel prepared for what they will see on the test. Personally, I received a 35 on this section of the ACT.

I give the students the lead and allow them to show me what they know, so we can build off of what they do understand. Additionally, I make sure they understand why they are doing each step. This helps them apply these same skills in more types of problems and helps them retain what to do. If they don't understand what to do, I explain the method they have been using in school, but if it doesn't make sense to them, I will teach them other methods to try.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

She taught me how to solve certain types math problems on the act, with speedier methods. She also taught me how to approach the science portion. Very personalized, patient, and gave no nonsense solutions. I believe i got higher scores on these portions. She also took my request on very short notice which was awesome!
