2. Write proficiently.
3. Compute mathematically.
Then practice the strategies on actual published materials. I do not use copies!

As a new high school teacher I saw many students struggle with their textbook reading assignments. So to help them I completed a Master's Degree in elementary education from Aquinas College that focused on reading education. I teach my students the best way to read, think logically, and earn their best scores.

Your child will do their BEST, if they know the three fundamentals of standardized tests. In addition to test prep strategies I teach time management skills. Students complete practice tests to reinforce our lesson. I provide instruction to eliminate future errors as we review the results.

I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I was born and raised here too. I began teaching in 1988 and have taught elementary, high school, and adult learners throughout my career. In 2008, I pursued a new opportunity evaluating community programs for a local healthcare provider. When my position was eliminated due to corporate downsizing, I began to explore other ventures. I started my own company, and worked as a tutor for a local company. Now I started tutoring on my own to help students maximize their ACT, SAT, and PSAT score.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a master's degree in Elementary Education from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I taught a 5/6 split for one year. I also taught reading and math remedial instruction for two years. I taught sixth grade computer applications for one year.

Elementary Math

While completing courses for my Masters Degree in elementary education at Aquinas College, I had the good fortune of taking mathematics courses from Dr. Jan Shroyer. She taught many mathematics methods. Primarily she focused on the development of math concepts, not only in kindergarten but all the way throughout every math subject.

From Dr. Shroyer I learned to start from visual and tactile. Students and parents may call this instruction as playing games but there really is deep reasoning backed by numerous research studies.

It is when kids tire of playing 'the game' that their insightful thoughts are turned into equations and in-turn algorithms.

I completed all of Aquinas College's reading instruction courses but chose to receive my degree in elementary education and not reading specialization. That was mostly due to how schools might classify my credentials and limit my employment options.
