Does your elementary school age child need help with schoolwork?

First of all, I'd like to share a little about myself:

I resigned last April 2012 after 17 years as a medical coder. Prior to that time, I taught first/second grade. I am happily married, have 2 grown children, a son and a daughter. I enjoy being a grandmother to a 4 year old granddaughter, and a 2 year grandson. My husband and I stay active-enjoying walks, biking, and travel. My personal interests include photography, reading, Sudokus, and Words With Friends.

For the past 3 years, I have been voluntarily tutoring children from Darfur, a Sudanese family here in Grand Rapids. The children I tutor are grades K, 3, 4, and 6, and occasionally their 11th grade brother. Initially their limited English presented a bit of a challenge that we continue to work through. It has given me much satisfaction when they understand what I'm presenting them with, and their joy in grasping the concept. I strive to make the learning experience enjoyable with the child being actively involved. It helps to be in touch with their teachers as well. Once I have an understanding of strengths and weaknesses, I can proceed much more effectively. I have also used my iPad in rewarding learning as there are many wonderful educational apps to be used. I would hope to apply these strategies in tutoring other children. I am especially interested in working with early elementary students.
