I am a professor and tutor with a PhD in economics from the University of Colorado at Boulder. I hold dual BA degrees in economics and German from Western Michigan University, with minors in math and political science. My doctoral focus was environmental and public economics; however, my areas of interest and teaching expertise extend into urban economics and economic development. I have over fifteen years of combined teaching experience in economics at Chulalongkorn University, University of Colorado, and Front Range Community College; and eight years of formal tutoring experience within various university departments.
While at Colorado I was hired by the athletics department and spent over six years tutoring student athletes in econ, math, and stats. I was the head math tutor for five years and held regular drop-in round table sessions in addition to the scheduled one-on-one sessions. While at Western Michigan I worked for the math department as a tutor for drop-in help focusing on calculus.
For twelve years I taught undergraduate econ in an international program at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, the top university in Thailand. Courses were conducted in English to non-native English speakers – Thai and exchange students from Europe and Asia. Writing letters I have helped graduates from this program get accepted into top graduate programs around the world including LSE, Oxford, Harvard, among others. I was twice-voted "Best Teacher" in the program.
While I greatly appreciate and enjoy math, my approach to economics education has evolved to emphasize critical thinking, institutional analyses, and written communication skills over mathematical analysis within a narrow neoclassical framework. While I can certainly help students understand the models well enough to succeed in the tests, depending on their interests and motivation, I can also help them think about economic subjects on a much deeper and critical level.
