My name is Dave and I am a graduate of Aquinas College in Grand Rapids. I taught remedial reading in Racine, Wisconsin for 4 years at the high school level. I moved back to Michigan to be closer to family. My students were 10th graders who mostly read at the 3rd and 4th grade levels. Once students fall behind in reading, many feel "they are not good at it" and resist trying. The first step for these type of students is psychological: a) they wont be made fun of or belittled for their (lack of) reading skill, b) they will need to make a good faith effort to work at this skill, and c) know that the tutor will be helpful and supportive in that regard. I also participated in track & field and cross country while in college. I broke 4 school records in track. I felt there were others on the team with as much talent. But the difference was who was willing to do the work. Improving in a subject like reading will take work & time, just as it does in track and field.
