My Bachelor's degree is in English Language & Literature, my Master's degree is in Literature, and my Education Specialist degree and Ph.D. are both in Educational Leadership. I am a certified teacher in both English and psychology for grades 6-12, and my administrative certificate spans grades K-12. I have been tutoring high school and college students on Wyzant since 2017, focusing on writing, literary analysis, test prep (SAT/ACT), and college admissions. I am passionate about education, and I love working directly with students to help them develop the skills they need to succeed both in school and in life.

I relate well to students of all ages, and I focus on making tutoring sessions engaging and fun, while helping them better understand and apply relevant concepts according to their needs and goals. Seeing students become more capable and confident as their performance improves makes teaching and tutoring the most rewarding profession.

I have taught a variety of English classes, including AP Language, AP Literature, American/World Literature, and Writing Lab. I served as an AP English Exam essay scorer for the College Board, and I’ve helped hundreds of teachers apply best practices in instruction. Although I’m driven purely by student success rather than personal distinction, I’ve been honored and humbled by a number of awards: Teacher of the Year, Elite 40 Under 40, Scholar of Excellence, Rookie of the Year, “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers,” Exceptional Educator, and Most Influential Teacher.

I believe all students can learn and achieve at high levels with the proper support, and I look forward to opportunities for helping students make their best even better. Please reach out to me to set up a tutoring session today!

SAT Reading

SAT Reading

SAT Reading preparation is one of my foremost specialty areas, and I thoroughly enjoy helping students improve their reading comprehension skills while also sharing proven strategies specific to succeeding on the SAT Reading test. I have been working with students individually on SAT prep since 2017, and I also teach comprehensive SAT preparation course covering all modules of the digital SAT. I scored a perfect 800 on the combined Reading and Writing section of the SAT, and I have had several students do so, as well. More importantly, I have helped countless students raise their SAT scores significantly—an average of 120 points. To date, five of my students have scored 1590 overall on the SAT. I share specific SAT test-taking strategies with my students, and we focus on skill building according to each concept, including close reading, annotating passages, making connections among ideas, utilizing context clues, applying the rules of proper grammar and usage, analyzing data, and effectively transitioning between ideas. I show students how to approach each question type, how to select the “best” answer, and how to avoid the SAT’s common trap answers while also explaining the SAT’s tendencies. I work hard to enhance students’ strengths and help them develop more knowledge, skill, and confidence in their areas of greatest need. Please reach out to schedule a lesson today!

Best English tutor ever!

Phillip has been tutoring both my high school sons for the last year and a half. They are each different writers so I can write from the perspective of two different types of tutoring that Phillip provides. For my older son, he is able to help in fine tuning and teaching the more nuanced touches of a finished paper. For my younger son, he helped greatly with organization and structuring his papers. After just a few lessons, my younger son has improved 10 fold. He is more confident and earning As in English! Phillip is always incredibly responsive and accommodating with online appointment times. He always gives a thoughtful and detailed update after each lesson. Probably the best compliment though is that both my boys think he is the best tutor they have ever had. According to them, he is the GOAT!

Tutor responded:

Wow! Thank you for sharing such wonderful feedback as I've really enjoyed working with both boys these past couple years. You are correct that they have different personalities and writing styles, but they are both terrific students and impressive human beings. I look forward to continuing to help them further strengthen their writing skills as they push towards even higher degrees of sophistication.

Amazing tutor

I have had the pleasure of working with Phillip as a tutor for my daughter, and the results have been nothing short of amazing. Writing has been a challenge for her, but Phillip's patience, dedication, and thoughtful approach have made all the difference. His persistence has not only helped her improve her writing skills, but also developed a genuine love for literature. The progress she has made is remarkable. We are so incredibly grateful for his support!

Patient and uplifting

He is trustworthy and has an outstanding ability to connect with young people. He put my daughter at ease and within a few minutes she opened up to share her work product so that they could then meticulously identify areas where she could improve. He left her feeling motivated to work hard and she was happier than I have seen her in several weeks. She worked toward the assignment after this lesson concluded with a renewed positive attitude. Highly recommend.

11th hour savior!

Select jumped into an AP literature, essay a few days before it was due and supported my daughter with time together her evidence to connect to her thesis statement. He was incredibly hands-on and supportive of her work. I’m definitely looking forward to using phillip again!

Great SAT tutor

My 9th-grader began working with Phillip on SAT preparation three months ago and enjoyed her experience. Phillip explains concepts clearly, offers plenty of practice examples and supplementary materials (that he authored!) to reinforce knowledge. Not only does Phillip prepare my daughter for the test, he also helps her build solid foundation, which tremendously boosts her confidence! Look forward to working with Phillip in the future.

Tutor responded:

I really appreciate your thoughtful feedback, Elena! Your daughter has been a joy to work with, and every week, I look forward to our meetings as she is such an eager learner who is fully engaged and dedicated to continuous improvement! I also can't wait for her next PSAT, so she can show off everything she has learned!

Amazing AP English tutor!

Phillip is a patient, creative, and very logical person. He is always prepared and very knowledgeable. I am a STEM person and English was never my favorite subject. To top it all, my internship made me miss one day of school during which I had the English class. With Phillip I caught up on my classmates and I analyzed the texts in a completely different way than I was doing it in class. His way made sense and it helped me remember the books I read. With his help I became so much better at analysis and essay writing and start having A+ s. It was not grade inflation. I really became a stronger student and to my parents’ amazement I scored a 5 on the AP language. I continued preparing with Phillip for my AP Literature test. I scored great on the pre-tests and felt confident after taking the AP Lit test. Thank you so much!

Andree, 52 lessons with Phillip
Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for this wonderful testimonial! For these past two years, I have looked forward to our weekly meetings every Friday evening as we worked through the content and test preparation for both AP Language and AP Literature! You are an intelligent, insightful, witty, and invested student with a bright future ahead. Even though you may be mostly drawn to STEM fields, don't discount your knack for literature and writing as you have developed a strong skill set in both areas. All the best to you in college and beyond!
