Hi there! I am a husband, sea kayaker, geographer, and aspiring farmer based out of East Lansing, Michigan. I am currently working full-time as a geospatial analyst for a federal contracting company that works with the USDA Forest Service. I am also soon-to-be defending an M.S. in Soil Science and Sustainable Agriculture Systems at Utah State University.
Working with the Forest Service, I currently lead geospatial projects to update publicly available, authoritative feature classes stored in enterprise geodatabases, administer ArcGIS Online, staff the national GIS Help Desk. I also teach online sessions for skills in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and yes, sometimes still ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcScene). I have supported mobile GIS workflows through Avenza, ArcGIS Field Maps, or ArcGIS Survey123.
I have previously taught undergraduate and graduate-level GIS courses both in the classroom and online at Utah State University for three academic semesters. Prior to Utah State, I instructed environmental geology laboratory sessions at the University of Dayton for 5 academic semesters.
I enjoy farming and paddling. My wife and I are developing an 8+ acre regenerative and (hopefully soon) USDA certified-organic farm. I am fortunate to live in the Great Lakes Region with access to beautiful sea kayaking for all skill levels.
I am always learning and strive to help my students develop the skills they are looking for. I listen to my students, help them approach a problem through critical thinking, then evaluate the solution. I encourage all my students to spend 20 minutes on a problem first, then ask me about their solution options where we can discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each approach.
I mostly teach online sessions for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to ages 18 and up on Wyzant. I am open to other topics listed above, just reach out!
