Students! You want a tutor who will be your #1 advocate in your academic journey. That's where I, Dr. Darling, come in. I bring subject expertise, encouragement, tons of patience, and a genuine investment in your success. Learning can feel vulnerable, especially when you're struggling with material or facing a tight deadline. As a tutor, my goal is for you to leave our sessions not just with better work, but with more confidence in your own abilities.

I have five years of teaching experience as a graduate student instructor, teaching college and master-level courses in human-computer interaction, human-centered design, and information science at the School of Information at the University of Michigan. I can tutor you on the psychological principles that underpin the design of various technologies, as well as in academic writing for various audiences. Need to write a background report that evaluates your critical thinking and analytical skills? I can help you organize your ideas and identify the building blocks for strong writing in your own voice.

Now, about ChatGPT, Claude, and other GenAI tools. The jury is still out on the consequences of AI on student learning. My take on human-AI collaboration, supported by emerging research in human-computer interaction and beyond, is that such tools can be genuinely useful for learning! Shocker, huh? AI can help you brainstorm, check your understanding, or work through explanations. What it CAN'T do is replace the deep engagement that produces real learning. The key is that you remain the critical thinker in the driver's seat. Depending on the AI usage policies set by your school or institution and your educational needs, I can help you develop a productive relationship with these tools: knowing when they're helpful, recognizing their limitations, and ensuring your own thinking stays at the center of your work.

Career Development

Career Development

I've got hands-on experience helping doctoral students figure out how their academic skills translate to career opportunities outside the university, particularly in government and policy work. In 2024, I guided three PhD students through the application process for internships with the U.S. Government Accountability Office, teaching them how to transform their CVs into federal resumes and coaching them on interview strategies like the STAR method. Two of those students landed GAO internships, and at least one received a permanent job offer afterward. They've told me my insider knowledge and specific guidance made a real difference in shaping their career paths, especially when it came to understanding how rigorous research training applies to policy analysis and federal work.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I've spent years helping people get their ideas down on paper in ways that are clear, compelling, and true to what they're trying to say. Whether it's structuring an argument, finding the right evidence, or just untangling a mess of thoughts into something readable, I know how to guide writers through the process without taking over their voice. I'm good at spotting where an essay loses steam or wanders off track, and I can help folks tighten up their prose while keeping what makes their writing interesting. From brainstorming to final edits, I've got the teaching experience and patience to help students at any level improve their writing.
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

I know how to help people prepare for interviews so they can tell their story with confidence and make a strong impression. I've coached folks on translating their experience into concrete examples using methods like STAR, which helps them show what they've accomplished instead of just talking in abstracts. Whether it's practicing answers, thinking through how to handle tough questions, or figuring out how to connect their background to what an employer is looking for, I can help people get ready to put their best self forward. I've seen firsthand how good preparation makes a difference—my coaching has helped students land competitive internships and job offers.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I've worked with close to ten students on their graduate school application materials, helping them polish their writing and make sure their strengths and authentic voice come through clearly on the page. I know how to spot when someone's underselling themselves or getting tangled up in jargon, and I'm good at drawing out the stories and experiences that really show who they are and why they're a great fit for their programs. Having been through the academic gauntlet myself, I understand what admissions committees are looking for and how to help applicants make their case without losing what makes them unique. Whether it's proofreading for clarity or digging deeper to find the right angle, I can help folks put their best foot forward.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I've got seven years of ethnographic and qualitative research experience and five years of teaching human-centered design as a graduate student instructor at the University of Michigan School of Information. My own doctoral dissertation work focused on information brokers and desire-based frameworks, so I know firsthand what it takes to wrestle a complex research project into a coherent thesis. I understand how to help students transform their available information and ideas into strong academic writing, especially when they're navigating challenging circumstances or feeling stuck. Plus, I've got the patience and practical experience to guide folks through the whole messy, rewarding process from start to finish.
