In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught for 39 years in K-2 classrooms. One of my main goals was teaching my students phonemic awareness in order to become better readers. In my classrooms I have used Fountas and Pinnell, Sounds and Letters and other phonics based programs. I also incorporated phonics in my spelling and word work classes. I have taken many professional development classes in this area.
