About Zane

Bio

I'm Zane - a classically-trained, professional composer & all-around musical Renaissance man. I also teach English (CELTA/TEFL-certified), skills to learn foreign languages, and study skills.

Rather than going to university, I went straight to the best by studying privately under Juilliard-trained, Boulanger-lineage mentors. Noticing my passion and natural skill in music and as an educator, they gave me their blessing to teach - which brings me here!

Rather than going to university, I went straight to the best by studying privately under Juilliard-trained, Boulanger-lineage mentors. Noticing my passion and natural skill in music and as an educator, they gave me their blessing to teach - which brings me here!

I teach many areas of music, including-but-not-limited-to: composition/songwriting, piano, guitar, music theory, ear training, dictation, and everything music production. I live for music!

Learning effectively is all about how it’s approached. Here’s a few ways of how I make our lessons together as natural and enriching as possible:

1) I make music simple, easy-to-understand, and relevant for any student - whether they're a well-seasoned musician or completely new to the subject!

2) I teach via active learning: tackling the material head-on & getting our hands dirty with it. We'll even use your favorite music as our basis!

3) We’ll instill a complete, well-rounded, and practical understanding & application of whatever you're looking to learn about! In the end, you’ll have an answer to any “what”, “why”, or “how” that you may need to confront!

I also devise a personal curriculum for each student, depending on their goals, to focus their learning for an overall meaningful & effective experience.

I'm very easy-to-reach and will always provide fast responses. Please get in contact if you have any additional questions or want to schedule a lesson! I look forward to hearing from you!

Composition (Music)

I'm a professional composer myself with years of experience with real-world projects. I've been classically-trained in a composition via private lessons under Dr. Alan Belkin (Canadian composer). I've also written pieces for assignments in my college music programs & passed with the highest marks.

Music Production

I've had years in lessons & my own personal work of doing music production. Whatever it is that you're looking to learn - songwriting, mixing, synthesizers & virtual instruments, etc. I would love to help! Songwriting & production are intimately-tied, so I often stress the importance of thinking in both when it comes to music production.

I studied piano for multiple years with a private tutor at my school originally, and then on my own as a supplement to my rigorous composition training. I have the piano completely unlocked: chords, arpeggios, musical textures, voice-leading, melodies, sight-reading & reading sheet music, improvising etc. Whatever it is one is learning to know, I'm happy to help!

I have a lot of experience singing choral vocals, and studied the voice extensively in terms of its properties as an instrument as part of my composition training. great teacher

I had my first lesson with Zane. He was very organized and I feel very excited for our next lesson

Adam, 10 lessons with Zane

I enjoyed my lesson!

Zane gave me personal insight on how to play any song. He showed me a new way on seeing theory, not the circle of fifths, that I hadn’t learned before. I would take lessons with him again.

Knowledgeable and patient

Zane is teaching guitar to my 13 years old daughter. He is knowledgeable and able to identify my daughter needs for improvement and significantly helped her on that area needed in few sessions . He patiently lead my daughter to be confident guitarist. I would highly recommend him as a teqcher.

So much growth in a short period of time!

It’s been about 5 weeks since my son started his weekly lessons with Zane. The growth in my son’s music abilities has increased exponentially! Thank you, Zane. My son is enjoying his lessons with you so much!

Knowledgeable and friendly tutor

Zane was very knowledgeable and encouraging and is overall a great music teacher! His scale degree theory teaching was very helpful in particular. He is also patient and listens to what you want to do or get better on and structured lessons around that.

Madigan, 1 lesson with Zane

Knowledgeable

His teaching method involves analyzing and breaking down current songs. He suggested various software programs for me to improve my own methods. He was able to answer all my questions.

Bob, 1 lesson with Zane

Would recommend any starter to him! He really was able to identify what needed to be done for me to get to where I need to be

Fabulous tutor

Zane is a really fabulous teacher. He really goes the extra mile to care for and help me out. Our main focus is learning how to use synthesizers but Zane has helped me with so much more.....learning how to set up my computer for making music on a DAW, tracking down songs that I hear on TV or radio that I couldn't find myself, and how to organize my music library too. He even sends me music that he thinks I will like, and articles about my favorite songs and also musicians that he thinks I will find interesting. He is an absolutely brilliant teacher and also a very personable and caring individual. I am truly lucky to have found him!
