Bio

I'm Zane - a classically-trained, professional composer & all-around musical Renaissance man.

Rather than going to university, I went straight to the best by studying privately under Juilliard-trained, Boulanger-lineage mentors. Noticing my passion and natural skill in music and as an educator, they gave me their blessing to teach - which brings me here!

I teach many areas of music, including-but-not-limited-to: composition/songwriting, piano, guitar, music theory, ear training, dictation,...

I teach many areas of music, including-but-not-limited-to: composition/songwriting, piano, guitar, music theory, ear training, dictation, and everything music production. I live for music!

Learning effectively is all about how it’s approached. Here’s a few ways of how I make our lessons together as natural and enriching as possible:

1) I make music simple, easy-to-understand, and relevant for any student - whether they're a well-seasoned musician or completely new to the subject!

2) I teach via active learning: tackling the material head-on & getting our hands dirty with it. We'll even use your favorite music as our basis!

3) We’ll instill a complete, well-rounded, and practical understanding & application of whatever you're looking to learn about! In the end, you’ll have an answer to any “what”, “why”, or “how” that you may need to confront!

I also devise a personal curriculum for each student, depending on their goals, to focus their learning for an overall meaningful & effective experience.

I'm very easy-to-reach and will always provide fast responses. Please get in contact if you have any additional questions or want to schedule a lesson! I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved Subjects

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I'm a professional composer myself with years of experience with real-world projects. I've been classically-trained in a composition via private lessons under Dr. Alan Belkin (Canadian composer). I've also written pieces for assignments in my college music programs & passed with the highest marks.
Ear Training

Ear Training

I studied ear training for multiple years as a supplement to my rigorous composition studies. We can take it simple or get incredibly technical, but the main focus will always be to get you confident & comfortable with the skill. Whatever it is one is looking to learn, I'm happy to help!
General Music

General Music

All of my already-approved subjects on Wyzant so demonstrate that I'm definitely a component in 'General Music"; I recommend checking what I had responded to them with!
Guitar

Guitar

I studied guitar for multiple years as a supplement to my rigorous composition training. I have the guitar unlocked: chords; arpeggios; solos & riffs; voice-leading & melodies; tabs, sight-reading, & sheet music; improvising; proper technique & form etc. Whatever it is one is looking to learn, I'm happy to help!
Music History

Music History

I'm a classically-trained composer who loves all styles of music, so through my training & in my own time, I've learned a plethora about the biggest events in musical history. Whether it's prehistory to the modern pop of today, I'm ready to help you learn the fascinating nature of this subject. We can go from just the general historical details down to the nitty-gritty of how the music itself worked in whichever period of time!
Music Production

Music Production

I've had years in lessons & my own personal work of doing music production. Whatever it is that you're looking to learn - songwriting, mixing, synthesizers & virtual instruments, etc. I would love to help! Songwriting & production are intimately-tied, so I often stress the importance of thinking in both when it comes to music production.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I studied music theory for multiple years as a supplement to my rigorous composition training, and have extensive experience with in a school/academic setting. We can take it simple or get incredibly technical, but the main focus will always be to get you confident & comfortable with the subject. Whatever it is one is looking to learn, I'm happy to help!
Piano

Piano

I studied piano for multiple years with a private tutor at my school originally, and then on my own as a supplement to my rigorous composition training. I have the piano completely unlocked: chords, arpeggios, musical textures, voice-leading, melodies, sight-reading & reading sheet music, improvising etc. Whatever it is one is learning to know, I'm happy to help!
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

Songwriting

I've been classically-trained in a composition via private lessons under Alan Belkin (Canadian composer). I've also written pieces for assignments in my college course's music programs & passed with the highest marks. I've been writing for years.
Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

I have a lot of experience singing choral vocals, and studied the voice extensively in terms of its properties as an instrument as part of my composition training. I help train especially in the musicality of the voice (as in, how to sculpt its characteristics to tell the musical story). We can take it simple or get incredibly technical, but the main focus will always be to get you confident & comfortable with the artform. Whatever it is one is looking to learn, I'm happy to help!

Excellent Tutor

My son is interested in performing a Christmas song (with his ukelele) for his school concert. Zane helped create an arrangement for him and taught my son how to utilize resources to put the melody and chords together.

I enjoyed my lesson!

Zane gave me personal insight on how to play any song. He showed me a new way on seeing theory, not the circle of fifths, that I hadn’t learned before. I would take lessons with him again.

Knowledgeable and friendly tutor

Zane was very knowledgeable and encouraging and is overall a great music teacher! His scale degree theory teaching was very helpful in particular. He is also patient and listens to what you want to do or get better on and structured lessons around that.
