I really like to help students reach their full potential by going over their weaknesses. I then use exercises to overcome those weaknesses until they become strengths. I really like to help students reach their full potential by going over their weaknesses. I then use exercises to overcome those weaknesses until they become strengths. I strive to make reading and writing fun by picking out books that students prefer and also taking suggestions about them about their favorite genres.

Also, having the student write their own stories can be an extremely rewarding experience. I don't require that every student do it but it can be extremely rewarding for both parties and I love to see the imagination.

Depending on the age and grade of the student I try to incorporate educational games when possible. Most of the students love the games and it's a fun way to learn.

Also, whenever possible I try to compare the cinematic version to the actual book we are reading. It's always fun and interesting to compare and contrast the same story in both mediums. It also gives a nice visual to a student that is struggling with a concept or setting in the book.

I have tutored for about three years during my time in California and tutored grades 1 through 9. I took a break to pursue other interests, but now I'm hungry to tutor and help students again. Love watching the light go on in a students mind when they truly understand something. In some ways I relearn as well, by discovering new books and different ways to utilize my teaching methods.

I have a B.A.A in Graphic Design but minored in Journalism. I've also proofed extensively for a local Newspaper.

I've written many short stories and essays during my time in and out of college. I genuinely care about the students ability to learn the material he or she reads, as a former young student.

I totally emphasize with the struggle that students go through when reading or writing. Whether it's understanding the reading material, vocab, grammar and punctuation I'll be with your every step of the way. I'm in your corner! As a practicing writer, I love the sense of completion when an essay or short story is communicated effectively.

Drawing

Drawing

I have drawn since the age of 6 and have written and illustrated books through my younger years. I won an award from Ford at a vocational school based on a colored pencil drawing I did for Ford Credit. I have also taken some classes in high school and college that pertain to the subject; including life and figure drawing. I have taught a class on storyboards at MPI of Michigan Film School and have my own small business drawing them. I have also drawn and inked several comic books.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have about two years experience tutoring students 1st through 9th grade. I have several methods of teaching such as games, flashcards and worksheets that I use to help facilitate learning. Set up an appointment today!
English

English

While attending Central Michigan university, I took numerous English classes because reading and creative writing were among my favorite subjects. I decided to minor in Journalism because I thought it would hone my writing skills a lot more and force me to be more accurate in my writing. I was right! Over the years I've tutored many students from 1st to 9th grade in English. This has given me the patience and skill to interact and teach students of a vast age range. I cover everything the subject has to offer, including but not limited to reading and comprehension, grammar, punctuation, spelling, writing and other aspects of the English Language Arts. I deeply enjoy watching the students eyes light up when they understand a concept. Contact me today to set up our first appointment!
Proofreading

Proofreading

I was a proofreader for the Advisor & Source Newspaper in Shelby Township, MI. During my time there I proofread many written paragraphs describing numerous homes. Also, during my time as a tutor in California I proofread numerous stories and exercises for my students. I've learned proofreading in a few high school and college courses and proofread articles written by my fellow students. I'll usually go over the symbols that are used to correct punctuation, spelling, etc and prepare flashcards for the student to memorize the symbols and their meanings. I'll have the student proofread various sentences from a workbook or sentences that I've written. This repetition helps them learn how they can correct bad punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, etc.
Reading

Reading

I graduated from Central Michigan University. During my time there I've read and analyzed numerous short stories, novels and essays in the English and Journalism classes that I took. One of them was called, The Literary Dimensions of Books and Films in which I learned a great deal about metaphors, themes, subtext and comprehension. I also compared and contrasted books and their film adaptations. I usually have the student read a chapter to me, after that I ask them to respond to the series of questions I wrote about the chapter. They can answer these questions either written or orally to check their comprehension. I also use workbook exercises of short stories in which the student reads and answers questions pertaining to the story that they read. I'll go over definitions of metaphors, similes and other tools of comprehension with them, testing them as I go. I'm also an avid reader and read almost daily. I read about thirty to forty books a year on average and so far there's no sign of slowing down.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

During my time in college I expanded my vocabulary through reading quite a bit, but when tutoring we have to get to the issue of it and tackle it head on. When I tutor I use a dictionary along with reading the students favorite or preferred book. I write down any words that the student didn't really understand and ask them find it in the dictionary. After that, they write the word down on a flashcard for future memorization. I have a review after a number of sessions and test them on all the vocab they struggled with. I also use worksheet exercises to teach vocab through context of the sentence that it's used in. This way, a lot of new vocab can be learned on their own along with help from a dictionary.
Writing

Writing

I've minored in Journalism at Central Michigan University, which helped me focus on writing a story out of facts and proofread it as well. I've also written numerous, essays, summaries, short stories, screenplays and a novel. One of the things I love to do with a student is have them write a journal entry for each day they meet with me. It's a great way to just 'start writing' without thinking too hard. I usually have them write, in sequential order, the events of their day; this also helps them write a sequence of events in a self contained story. I also use practice worksheets for basic sentence structure, punctuation, complete sentences, sentence fragments, etc. The student identifies which sentences are written correctly and which aren't. I love having the student write part of a complete story throughout our sessions so at the end of our time they would have written a final publishable draft!
