My name is Jake, and I am a certified (CC) secondary educator with a Master's Degree in Secondary Education (History) and a Bachelor's Degree in Communications from Oakland University. I am a Clarkston resident, and attended Clarkston High School, graduating in 2013 with honors from the International Baccalaureate Program. Through two years of pedagogical studies and invaluable hands on experience in student teaching at Utica, Huron Valley, and Clarkston Community Schools, I have learned how to become an effective, impactful tutor and instructor. I am equipped to utilize the skills I have developed within the State of Michigan's Core Teaching Practices to better prepare students in historical writing, AP, and IB content within World History, American History, and Social Studies.
My tutoring approach is rooted in compassionate, attentive instruction with an initial focus on getting to you and building your confidence. The ocean seems impassable until you know how to sail. When someone is struggling in anything, they need to know that its normal to feel overwhelmed, and that they do have the ability, determination, and heart to overcome. From here, my sessions would focus on addressing what specifically you need to prepare for, emphasizing the importance of study habits and conceptual frameworks to serve as guides for further learning. You are free to schedule as many sessions are needed until your learning needs have been addressed.
Upon reaching out, we will schedule a free 15 minute meetup. (For parents: While not required, I highly recommend that the student attend the meetup). Once everyone is comfortable with moving forward, we can schedule our first session. I aim for one hour sessions, but if it goes a little longer or shorter, that is fine also. I prefer online instruction via Zoom, but would be willing to meet in person at Independence Township Library if desired. I look forward to meeting you soon, and whether your learning journey involves me or not, I wish you all the best!
