About Judith

Most of my adult life has been dedicated to helping people strive for and achieve personal and academic success. I have worked in the academic field for approximately 8 years; tutoring at a community college level for 4 years and scoring MEAP tests for 4 years. In addition, I have provided on the job training for individuals needing extra help. At the community college level I headed up study groups for Science classes, creating study guides and practice quizzes. I also individually tutored students in English and English as a Second Language. On the job site I implemented ways for the employee to perform his or her job duties using charts, visual cues and task lists. Currently I am tutoring Korean students in conversational English via the internet and e-books. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored ESL students at a Community College level for over 4 years and for one year over the internet. My focus is on helping the student first practice conversational English to get the student comfortable speaking it. Then I develop a lab setting for the student to meet and work on the other aspects of learning a foreign language such as verb conjugation, adverb and adjective placement in a sentence (structure), etc. I also help the student develop study skills to use for taking the TOEFl test.

Reading

I have tutored students individually and online for the past four years with ages ranging from elementary to college levels. I help students develop good organizational and study habits, skills that can be transferable to any area in life.

Study Skills

Over the years I have developed study skills to help students with special needs as well as help individuals with special needs on the job site. I interview a potential student to find out the best way he or she learns. I would then adapt my teaching style to their learning method.I have worked with visually impaired students who needed me to transcribe their classroom tapes into braille or who needed me to write lecture notes for them. I worked with students who were taking English as a Second Language writing up grammar lessons, participating in Bridge classes, developing study hours for conversational practices at home and using pictures to get across ideas. Most importantly, I asked the student where they felt they needed extra help identifying their individual strengths and weaknesses. In science classes such as Biology, Astronomy, Geology etc. I attended the classes so I could familiarize myself with the teacher's teaching style and then headed up study groups where I created study guides, practice exams and homework assignments appropriate to each specific class. In the workplace, I provided on the job training (coaching) for special needs individuals employing innovative ways to help the employee succeed at his or her job. Techniques I used included visual aids such as flip charts with pictures showing each step of a job, task lists to be checked off, cheat sheets to be referred to often and in some instances games to help the employee work on speed and accuracy. I filled out daily progress reports and acted as the liaison between employer and employee.
