Welcome, I’m Emma! I completed my undergraduate education majoring in biology and minoring in educational studies in 2021, and have spent my time since studying forest ecology at Michigan Technological University. I have completed my MS and PhD in forest ecology, studying the belowground responses of trees (and their fungal mutualists) to climate change.

I have been tutoring since high school, where I spent free time helping my peers with their math homework. In college, I tutored local elementary schoolers in reading and math, and college students as a teaching assistant for specific courses – including Global Change Biology and Introductory Chemistry. I further served as a teaching assistant during my graduate degree for courses in forestry/ecology field techniques course, wildlife habitat, statistics in R, and more. In the final year of my doctorate, I co-taught Forest Ecology and solo taught Tree Physiology. I typically begin tutoring by asking students to explain what they do know about a specific question or topic and then use intentional questioning to expose misconceptions or figure out where they’re stuck. Then, I love using digital/physical whiteboards to visualize those stuck points with students, as well as review opportunities for them to draw out concepts themselves.

I love learning myself, but I am most fulfilled when helping others reach their “lightbulb moments” – especially in subjects I am passionate about! I can tutor anything from broad introductory biology to genetics or ecology, as well as more specific subjects like tree physiology or climate change biology. I also have extensive experience with academic writing and am happy to provide (and explain) edits/revisions to papers. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want to know if I can support you in a specific area, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Or, if what you need help with falls within the areas listed above, go ahead and schedule a lesson!

Data Analysis

I am primarily experienced with data analysis in R, though I have some experience in Python as well. I have taken data analysis in R courses and then served as the teaching assistant for those courses. Through my PhD work, I have experience with both basic statistics (e.g. ANOVAs, t-tests, correlation matrices) and more advanced techniques (e.g. principal component analysis, PERMANOVA, structural equation modeling, multiple ordination methods).
