My love of working with children started more than 20 years ago when working with inner city kids in a parks department summer program. I ran the traveling craft lessons and realized this was where I was meant to be: working with kids and helping them to see their talents and strengths; to build their confidence and make learning meaningful. I earned my Bachelor of Science from Indiana University, also taking classes in Environmental Science and Biology. A portion of my student teaching took place in New Zealand where I was able to immerse myself in new techniques and learning environments. I have completed part of my graduate coursework in Literacy, Language, and Culture.
My classroom teaching experience includes 10 years in Pre-K, First and Third grades in Virginia and Michigan. I also have experience tutoring elementary-aged students in Chicago, IL and online to children learning English in China, as well as English to high school students while volunteering in Salvador, Brazil. Most recently, I spent over 3 years as a reading interventionist and literacy coach for students in 2nd-6th grades. My approach has always been to gain an understanding of what interests kids and help motivate them by building a positive learning environment built on trust and respect. I enjoy seeing children excel when their understanding clicks and they’re able to independently apply what they’ve learned. I hope to provide a safe, engaging environment for students to gain confidence and experience success!
