About Kimberly

I am an elementary school teacher with a Master's Degree in the area of special education. I have had taught for over 10 years with the ages of preschool through eighth grade. My passion is reading and literacy as well as phonics development. I have had training in the Orton-Gillingham Phonics and Reading programs, Fountas and Pinnel Leveled Literacy Intervention reading program, Lucy Caulkin's Reading and Writing workshops and also the Handwriting Without Tears program.

I also enjoy math and have experience in the Touch Math learning system and am very creative in developing ways to engage students in all subject areas.

In the 10 years that I have taught, I have been an inclusionary support teacher, resource room teacher and self-contained classroom teacher. I have also been employed as a homebound teacher. I also have a 9 year old son who has Down syndrome and ADHD so I am able see things not only from the perspective of an educator but also as a parent to a child with special needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

As a certified special education teacher, I have had numerous students who have had ADD/ADHD. My younger son also has ADHD, so I am very well versed in how to manage and implement various differentiated teaching styles to meet students individual needs.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

As a certified special education teacher, I have had numerous students who have had Autism. I am very well versed in how to manage and implement various differentiated teaching styles to meet students' individual needs. I realize the importance of visual schedules, visual cues and implementing specialized teaching techniques to help the student be successful.

Dyslexia

I have a BA and MA degree in special education grades K-12. I have taught for 10+ years in public schools, charter schools and also homebound teaching. I have experience in differentiating lessons in order to meet each students' individual needs. I have been trained in the Orton Gillingham Project Read program, the Fountas and Pinnel Leveled Literacy Intervention reading program and numerous other programs that implement various learning modalities....kinesthetic, auditory, visual. Helping students with special needs is my passion and something that is near to my heart. Handwriting

I have taught students handwriting implementing various tactile modalities to meet individual needs. Hand Writing Without Tears is one program that I like to use with students as it is a very engaging and proficient way help students with handwriting. I am a certified special education teacher with a Master's degree in this field.

Hard Of Hearing

I have a BA and MA degree in special education grades K-12. I have taught for 10+ years. Our son is limited in his verbal communication, thus requiring that we have extensive use of sign language...some of which is modified to meet his needs.

Phonics

I have been trained in the Orton Gilingham Project Reading program. Worked with students implementing both the Lucy Caulkins Reading and Writing Workshops. I also have experience with the Fountas and Pinell Leveled Literacy Intervention program.

Study Skills

I have assisted students in resource room setting working on study skills. Most of these students had organizational skills that were preventing them from studying material. I worked closely with students showing them effective study skills techniques such as highlighting important facts, making flash cards, organizing folders for each subject, reviewing subjects being tested on one on one.
