Hello! I hold a B.S. in Biological Psychology, Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, and am a licensed clinical psychologist.

I was fortunate to have a math professor for a mother and research physicist for a father. Although I did not follow directly in their footsteps, the solid foundation my parents provided me in math and science helped me pursue my occupational dreams - a specific example would be that my quantitative score on the GRE (780) helped rather than hindered my getting into graduate school. A few academic achievements I am proud of include completing Calculus 3 with an A, scoring a 5 on the Advanced Placement English Exam, and I was the go-to person for my graduate school peers when they needed help with statistics. Some of the incredible opportunities I have had that I believe would not have been possible without a strong background in math and science include: Presenting my research on synesthesia at Oxford and other conferences, working with defendants in forensic psychology, and ultimately looking forward to an interesting and rewarding career. I have three years of teaching experience at the college level and have been tutoring with WyzAnt for six years. From these experiences I believe that the most effective tutoring method is to encourage a person to utilize their preferred learning style in addition to a strong rapport between the teacher and the student.

Although I have tutored in a wide variety of subjects, I would say that, simply by popular demand, recently I have spent more time tutoring in Chemistry and Algebra II than other subjects. At the moment I am looking to take on just one or two students.

Lastly, I would like to say that for a learning experience tailored to the individual student, one-on-one tutoring cannot be beat. Personalized tutoring is far more effective for helping a student achieve their goals than any scenario in which a number of students share a teacher.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Personally, I have taken math courses through Calculus 3 and 2 semesters of graduate coursework in Statistics. I greatly enjoy tutoring in Algebra because it contains the fundamental building blocks of Algebra II and Precalculus. In graduate school I was involved in research examining Math Anxiety and Math Performance; Algebra 1 is arguably the turning point for many people in terms of leaving certain occupations open as opportunities. I find it extremely rewarding to work with students and increase their confidence and efficacy so that opportunities strongly linked to math and science remain open as they move forward in their scholarly pursuits.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is the subject in which I have tutored the most, aside from Chemistry. I find it very rewarding to tutor in Algebra 2 as it has great overlap with content in standardized tests such as the GRE or SAT and is used heavily in non-calculus based Physics and Chemistry. If you are going to continue with math past Algebra 2, you will be doing yourself an immense favor by taking the time to master the core skills in Algebra 2 - and I'm delighted to be a part of it!
Chemistry

Chemistry

My Chemistry Experience: As an undergraduate, I took the Chemistry courses required in a pre-medical curriculum (2 semesters of Chemistry, and 2 semesters of Organic Chemistry). I also took Biochemistry, which was my favorite course during my undergraduate years - I appreciated the way Biology, Physics, and Chemistry all came together in that course. As a tutor, I have tutored more in Chemistry than any other subject, simply due to popular demand. I have tutored students in regular high school Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and college Chemistry. Please feel free to read student reviews of my tutoring and contact me with any additional questions.
English

English

I have taught writing intensive classes (Methods and Procedures) for 3 years a a graduate student en route to getting my PhD. I have also published peer-reviewed articles in my field.
GED

GED

I have tutored people for the GED, and am happy to report that they all passed with less than 5 tutoring sessions. Many times, it seemed to be just a matter of overcoming math and test anxiety and learning some key mathematical concepts. Not many exams are as rewarding as the GED when passed; it is always a delight to be part of the process.
GRE

GRE

I have both tutored and taught courses on taking the GRE. Generally, students increase their overall scores by 200 points at the least after working with me.
SAT Math

SAT Math

Including tutoring approximately a dozen students on the SAT over the past four years, I also taught SAT courses for a test preparation company (for one year). Besides tutoring/prep courses, the best thing one can do to prep for SAT Math is to master core skills and concepts from their Algebra I/II and Geometry classes. Although the SAT Math Test pulls from the courses listed above, the questions are often trickier than you would encounter on a homework assignment. It's very satisfying for me as a tutor to help students anticipate potential "curve ball" questions on a test, but of course this is best done when the student has a solid foundation of math skills from which to work. Fortunately, much of the content on the SAT is predictable and students can indeed master the core concepts expected on the SAT in advance of taking it.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a major component in Precalculus with which I have had much experience. Although the functions of sine, cosine and tangent may seem like a foreign language at first, you really can master these functions and interrelate them with each other and their derivatives. I greatly enjoy tutoring in this area and would like to share that I place heavy emphasis upon the Unit Circle when tutoring Trigonometry.

Fantastic Tutor!

When I realized I wasn't keeping pace in a summer session Chemistry 1 course, I knew I had a decision to make: drop the class, or get help. I opted for the latter and, after my first one-on-one session with Katherine, I knew I made the right decision to persevere. She not only provided immediate help, within two hours of initial contact, she adjusted her in-depth knowledge of Chemistry to make the material easy to digest. Summer science courses are inherently demanding because the material is often dense and the pace is fast. In two month's time, we covered 13 chapters, 4 unit exams, 14 lecture quizzes, 12 lab quizzes, 12 lab assignments, 12 lecture assignments and 1 final exam. Katherine was with me every step of the way. Because of her vast knowledge, tireless commitment and caring, considerate coaching style, I received a B in both lecture and lab, and now have the confidence to continue with Chemistry 2. Katherine is knowledgeable, patient and understanding, making her an ideal tutor in a variety of subjects. She invites questions and provides an environment that is conducive to learning. I highly recommend Katherine as your tutor. No matter what your goal may be, Katherine will help you succeed.

A Great Tutoring Experience!

I came to Katherine in need of some serious GRE assistance as I've been out of college for 22 years!! In just 2 short sessions I was prepared for this exam! She is very familiar with this test and new exactly what I needed to be prepared! Most importantly she gave me the confidence I needed to GO FOR IT!! I passed with flying colors...thanks Katherine!

Results Oriented, Great with High Schoolers

When my daughter decided that she needed a tutor for geometry she asked me to do a search. I came across WyzAnt and Katherine. My daughter's criteria were a female that she could work with in a non-authoritarian manner. Katherine was perfect! She made geometry fun with her interactive style. My daughter went from failing to a B in geometry. These were the results we were looking for!

Katherine is a Life Saver!!

Katherine is an outstanding tutor and a life saver!! My son was in jeopardy of losing his admission acceptance to MSU because of his Pre-Calculus grade. Katherine worked with my son on his Pre-Calculus struggles and was able to raise his grade from failing to a B+ in 9 weeks. She is extremely knowledgeable in Calculus, and always showed up to the tutoring sessions very well prepared. She explained the Pre-Calculus concepts in manner that was easy for my son to understand. Katherine made my son feel comfortable and at ease from the first session. Katherine made the extra effort by sending my son sample problems he could work on in between tutoring sessions. She also took it upon herself to have the same course materials as my son was using in his Pre-Calculus course. I would (and will be) recommending Katherine to anyone trying to find a tutor for their son or daughter.

Great tutor

Katherine is a delightful, positive and very patient person. She is always very well prepared and is able to immediately zero in on comprehension difficulties. My son went from failing Chemistry to earning a "B" on his final exam within 6 weeks of working with Katherine. She is able to break down concepts and problems in a way that makes complicated material much easier to master. Vicki
