Hello there! My name is Erin! I recently finished the Adolescent English Inclusive Education program at the State University of New York at Brockport, receiving my Bachelor's of Science in English. The program was designed for English certification for 5th-12th grade as well as special education certification in 7th-12th grade. Although doing my undergraduate in secondary education, I am currently pursuing my master's in elementary education.
I am currently a substitute teacher for Edustaff, serving the Avondale, Bloomfield Hills, Clarkston, Madison Heights, and Hazel Park school districts K-12. From January to April, I did my student teaching in New York for 7th grade ELA, where my team had general education students and all students with IEP. In addition to substitute teaching and student teaching, I have also been a paraprofessional in a special education facility for summer school. Because of this, I have experience working with students with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, specific learning disabilities, and ESL students. I was also the content tutor for American Sign Language 100 at the State University of New York - Brockport. The school reported a 100% pass rate for every student who attended my one-on-one tutoring sessions.
I believe in content-based and interest-based instruction for all students, especially those who are seeking additional help in tutoring. By taking a content-based approach, students will engage in English specific activities and instruction directly related to what sparks their interest. Have a middle-schooler who loves Fortnite? They will learn how to identify claims, recognize evidence, pull key information, and identify fact versus opinion in an engaging, grade-level article about their favorite game. Have a Swiftie at home? We will deep dive into figurative language in her songs and practice writing our own. I know that students learn the best when they are actively engaged in the content topic, which is why I fully commit to practicing this way.
