Hello, Dear Parent/Guardian or Student!

Thanks for taking a moment to review my profile. I hope you'll find the information below helpful - please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or clarifications!

I graduated with Honors from Michigan State University with a Bachelors degree in Special Education and a teaching major of Language Arts in 2011 (field experience as early as 2007). I have worked with students from a broad range of backgrounds and with a plethora of special needs.

In addition to teaching elementary students in general classroom, camp counseling, and private tutoring settings over the years, I spent six years (2011-2017) working with The Princeton Review here in the USA and Score Plus Academy Pvt, Ltd. (an Indian franchise), teaching high school, undergraduate, and graduate students how to prepare for higher education admissions tests, including the ACT, SAT, MCAT, GRE, and GMAT, as well as helping many of them with college application essays - this extended to private tutoring, and it has been my privilege to help many students land a seat at their dream school over the years. More recently, I've worked with corporate professionals and self-published authors to tailor their writing for both professional and personal purposes.

Everyone is different, so my approach to helping you or your student learn will be customized to your or your student's particular learning style. Visual, auditory, kinetic, and tactile learning styles are all valid, and are all implemented in my teaching/tutoring, as required by the student's individual needs.

I look forward to working with you!

Accent Reduction

Accent Reduction

Over the past 18 years, I have helped many students with their language and speech. I use kinesthetics, physical manipulatives, and hand to throat techniques to help students identify their speech patterns and correct inaccuracies. I can comfortably teach anyone looking to reduce a foreign accent and speak American English (in a variety of dialects) more clearly.
ACT English

ACT English

Since 2011, I've been helping students prepare for the ACT (specializing in the English portion). I was able to help many students in the Middle East and India prepare for their US admissions exams from 2015 to 2017. One of my local students jumped a phenomenal 18 points on the English section using TPR methods; most students see improvement in the 5-10 point range.

Bible Studies

Bible Studies

Bible studies have been part of my education since early childhood. From Genesis to Revelation, I can help you to gain a general knowledge of the text or dig deeper with you. We can discuss specific people from the prophets like Elijah and Jeremiah, or pore over the Wisdom Literature, with writings from such men as Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived. Or we can dive into Paul's letters to the New Testament churches in Galatia, Ephesus, and Philippi, or simply read his story as he voyaged across the Roman Empire to share Christ crucified. If you want to study it, I may have insight, and if I don't, I will do my best to answer your questions with you by searching through Hebrew and Greek parallel texts and commentaries by those more learned than myself.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I am able to tutor elementary students in math, science, language arts, history and social studies. I have had experience tutoring via Michigan State University's Read to Succeed program in Lansing area schools in addition to my work through Wyzant, and have spent over 400 hours in the classroom setting working with children of various ages and grade levels to enhance social and academic growth and to promote success. Moreover, I have recently been hired in as the 3rd and 4th grade elementary teacher for the students of an inner city private school, and am looking forward to extensive professional development!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

One of the biggest problems students face in elementary mathematics is that they never conquer the basic principles of mathematics: the value of numbers, place value, and grouping. These concepts are absolutely crucial to the building of math knowledge, understanding, and skill. Teaching these core concepts is my primary goal. Frankly, I'm willing to do just about whatever it takes to help a student learn these concepts. Are we doing jumping jacks to group 10s? Let's do it! Does your student need to spin around in circles to understand how a circle works? I'll spin, too. Is your student an auditory learner? I'll repeat the same thing fifty times if I have to, with ten variations. Tactile? I'll recommend tools. Visual? I'll make sure I have really colorful stuff and draw boxes and funny illustrations. So many students just need these basics, and everything else comes easily!
English

English

I began to read at a very young age and found passion and thrill in the writing process; thus words have often seemed to me more like friends than objects of study. I find it a pleasure to engage students in their pursuit of excellence in these areas, and am enthusiastic about unearthing confidence in each of my pupils so that they may comprehend, create, and critique all manner of text.
GMAT

GMAT

I taught GMAT prep for Score Plus Academy in the Middle East and India from 2015-2017, and have since privately tutored a number of GMAT students.
Grammar

Grammar

I have experience with teaching major coursework with a concentration of Language Arts through Michigan State University. I also have experience as an English/Verbal instructor of ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, and TOEFL.
GRE

GRE

I so enjoyed teaching the GRE to students in India from 2015 to 2017 - my training to do so was rigorous and the techniques I use come from a world leader in test prep and are extremely effective.
Phonics

Phonics

My teaching major at MSU was Language Arts. I took two courses in Linguistics and also took a literacy course that focused primarily on phonics. I have used and will continue to use age and grade appropriate testing materials to find student strengths and weakness in phonics and proceed accordingly.
Proofreading

Proofreading

My first experience with a red pen was as early as fifth grade - a friend was writing fantasy novels in his spare time, and asked me to look over them... and thus began a love affair with those between-line squiggles and notes in the margins! As an English teacher, a test prep instructor of the Verbal and English sections for college admissions exams, and an avid reader and language enthusiast, I greatly enjoy proofreading and editing; my students have found themselves quite pleased with their own work as they see the imperfections fall away like so many pieces of irrelevant marble chiseled from a masterpiece.
Reading

Reading

Michigan State University's College of Education places a strong emphasis on student literacy. One of my 300 level courses focused very intensively on that tenet, and included instruction in the development of the following: student motivation, followed by the foundational necessity of understanding concepts of print (concept of a word, letter placement, graphics, print symbolization, usage of print, processes of reading, etc.), phonological awareness (the alphabetic principle, which stipulates that a letter is a representation of some sound, along with letter-sound knowledge), the word decoding process, morphology, fluency and it's counterpart, comprehension, etc. All of these components are crucial to a student's reading and writing enjoyment and ability.
Spelling

Spelling

As a language buff and a word girl, I tend to see my words in my head as I say and even think them. I read at a twelfth grade reading level in fourth grade, and won second place in a regional spelling bee as a kid. my love for language, words, and particularly English spelling and grammar has only grown as I have.
Study Skills

Study Skills

A vast number of techniques - including trivia games, creating a study guide, drawing picture cues, making flash cards, circling/highlighting important words, and more - are useful for studying and retaining academic information. These techniques are implemented as applicable to each individual subject and topic, and have proven helpful in my own academic career; I have seen wonderful results with my students as well.
Writing

Writing

Writing has always been a passion of mine, and I find helping others to write well just as engaging and perhaps even more exciting than writing for myself. Over the last seven years, several high school, undergraduate, and aspiring graduate students have found themselves surprised by the depth and beauty of their own writing. I simply provide the outlet and aid in the process of showcasing each writer's unique talents, demonstrating and teaching students how to minimize (if not eliminate) spelling and grammar errors and maximize both the readability and magnetism of their work.

I was able to take my GMAT score from a 460 to a 540 in less than a few months. Alexandra was incredibly helpful, dedicated and responsive. I strongly recommend Alexandra for anyone needing a tutor. She is great!

Amazing Tutor

Alex is amazing! She is such a great tutor, I got to work with her for the GRE and GMAT, and she makes lessons digestible, and understandable. She will never make you feel dumb even on the simple math problems, and she really cares about her students success. She shows up each time extremely prepared and is always willing to help in any way she can, if you are studying for any of these exams you should work with her. She is the best!

An amazing, very understanding, and motivationally supporting tutor

We worked together on editing Personal Statement essay for college applications. My first draft was filled with unnecessary details with a highly disorganized structure. Once I met with her, she really helped me learn more about myself and what I wanted to always display in my college essays but just couldn't write it out well. With her, I really improved my essays and developed to demonstrate, as her and I called, "passion on passion." In addition to my Personal Statement essay, she also helped me edit supplemental essays and helped show more of myself to the college to come across as a better applicant. I wouldn't have been able to improve to a well-organized, "passion on passion" demonstrating essay if it wasn't for her. Definitely pick her as a tutor because she will always guide you to the right path.

Alexandra did a very nice job with our lesson on the IPA in making things clear. Only tip for improvement would to be more orderly in approach. Overall, she is an amazing tutor and very insightful, patient, and helpful.

BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD

Alexandra Goldston is my English writing tutor. I moved in California in 2017 from Europe, when I got a promotion. Alexandra helps me to improve my business written skills, especially in difficult and sensitive business situations. She helps me to edit my writing, correct my sentence structure and vocabulary, minimize my spelling and grammar errors. She help me write better sentences, express my ideas more clearly. Overall, she gave me tremendous confidence in this area. She is a soft-spoken and extremely patient, individual with great values. She was always on time and very flexible when I had to work longer hours. I am extremely grateful I found Alexandra as my tutor. I recommend her without reservation.

Patient and Brilliant

I am not a native speaker. I suffered from doing the GMAT Verbal part. I am very thankful to Alexandra. She taught me the grammar that I need to know for the GMAT. She also gave me very useful tips. I thought Sentence Correction was the most difficult part for me but after having lessons with her, it became a lot easier to find the correct answer choices. I believe with her brilliant teaching method, she will be able to help me cultivate the skills I need.
