I have 12 years of classroom teaching experience in instruction and planning lesson for different ability levels. I have taught all levels from Grades 1-8.

I have more than 15 years experience in tutoring students on an individual level. I am currently the S.M.A.R.T Tutor Supervisor at the International Academy in Benton Harbor, Michigan and I prepare and coordinate the lessons for 60+ students there.

When I am tutoring, I find the most effective way to help my students is to discover their learning style and use methods that coincide with their style. One thing I know for certain is that no two students learn exactly the same way. I also try to apply the current best-practice techniques so that they will be on the same page as their classmates.

Some of the methods I find most effective are using mnemonic devices like songs, acrostics, repetition, manipulatives, and individual practice, and most of all lots of encouragement. I believe all students can learn if they learn to believe in themselves and know that someone else believes in them as well.

I have 15+ years of experience working with ADHD and have it myself. I have taken many classes and professional development sessions on how to work with students that have ADHD. Many of the parents that I have worked with that have ADHD students have found be to be able to work with their ADHD student when other teachers really struggled with their child. I find that working with an ADHD child takes mostly patience and giving them different techniques that they can use to help them cope with their high speed brain.

I have 10+ years of experience working with students with dyslexia. I have training using the Barton Reading and Spelling Approach to reading. The Barton Reading and Spelling Program is a program designed to work specifically with dyslexia. I currently work with 2 students that have dyslexia. I have also had a number of reading intervention classes that have given me training in dyslexia. I also have training in Brain Gym which also works on correcting issues related to dyslexia.

Any child can be successful. In my 15+ years of experience as a tutor, and 11 years as a teacher teaching first through the 8th grade I have discovered that, any child can be successful, it is a matter of finding the right approach to helping the student to be able to understand any subject. When trying to teach a student I like to learn their learning style, and as well what their interests are in order to help them to reach their full potential.

Phonics is a big component of reading instruction, and is key in learning how to read and spell. Phonics has played a key role in my instruction as I taught first grade for two years of my teaching career, and second grade for three years. I have also seen phonics transform a child's reading ability while I was working as an interventionist to help struggling students.

Engaging Instructor

Meredith is able to wrangle two teenage boys into a conversation about study skills and she even gets them to laugh once in a while. She rocks! Oh, and the boys are actually g a skill set that they will be able to use for their entire educational career.

Exceeded Our Expectations!!!

Our granddaughter is going into her 4th week with Meredith. Since she has been working with Meredith, we have seen her spelling test scores go up 3 weeks in a row. Her handwriting has improved and her confidence level with reading is getting better every week. Meredith was also able to test her for Dyslexia and found that she is Dyslexic. She has given us exercises to help our granddaughter. We originally hired Meredith to work with her for reading but Meredith has exceeded our expectations in every way. Our Granddaughter enjoys working with her and waits for her to show up so they can start.

Feel at ease.

1st lesson went well. My daughter was a little afraid as she has had some bad experiences in the past. Meredith made her feel at ease. She was very patient with my daughter and took the time to get to know her as well as her background. My daughter and I are both looking forward to see the progress on her reading as school starts this fall. After lesson 2, my daughter is actually excited about learning. She is already connecting with Meredith and looking forward to each lesson.

Meredith is very patient with my child and has a very positive way about her. She is very creative and able to teach the way my child learns while still making it fun.
