I'm Ryan... in Portuguese it's pronounced like "LION" but swap that "LI" out for a "HI". :))

I just received my Ph.D. in Latin American Literature and Culture at the University of Texas at Austin, one of the strongest programs for Second Language teaching in the country! My area of speciality is Luso-Brazilian Cultural and Media Studies, and my dissertation analyzes how race and gender are constructed in the frontier between Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.

I just received my Ph.D. in Latin American Literature and Culture at the University of Texas at Austin, one of the strongest programs for Second Language teaching in the country! My area of speciality is Luso-Brazilian Cultural and Media Studies, and my dissertation analyzes how race and gender are constructed in the frontier between Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.

I currently teach Portuguese online to teachers in the Public School District of Portland, Maine who engage with Angolan refugee students and families. In the past, I worked in migrant advocacy as the Lead Interpreter at the Clinic for Asylum, Refugee & Emigrant Services at Villanova Law School, and have interpreted for Spanish and Portuguese-speaking migrants with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

For the past decade, I have taught all levels of university Spanish, Portuguese and Portuguese for Spanish Speakers language and culture courses. Recently, I taught a course titled "The Brazilian Frontier: Race, Gender and Landscape". In addition to UT, I have taught at Villanova, Drexel, and Thomas Jefferson Universities.

I received an MA in Hispanic Studies from Villanova University and a BA in Creative Writing and Latin American History from the University of Pittsburgh. I have spent several years living in different areas of South America, most recently Brasília, Brazil where I spend most of my time. I have also traveled to Uruguay, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Spain, and taught English in Chile and Argentina.

In my free time I enjoy bike riding and maintenance, rock climbing, birding and dabbling in guitar.

I received the Portuguese Teacher's Fellowship to pursue advanced training at Middlebury College in the summer of 2018. Most recently, I spent time in Recife, Brazil. Previously, I conducted two months of field work in Porto Alegre in 2016, and presented my findings in at the Brazilian Studies Association Conference at Brown University. I received a scholarship from the Brazilian Studies Association for this project, for which I had to illustrate my language proficiency in Portuguese.
