About Stephanie

Bio

I have enjoyed the personal gratification of tutoring since high school. Since I was 15 years old, I have shared my knowledge and love of mathematics with people of all ages. I attended Spelman College and Georgia Institute of Technology, where I received my Bachelor of Science in both Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. I also tutored my peers at these institutions

I currently have a long list of clients that I serve through one-on-one, online/in-home tutoring--and have both a high success rate and client loyalty with them.

My goal is to help students understand the foundation and theory behind math concepts, so that they can tackle any math problem with ease and confidence. Confidence is key!

ACT Math

ACT Math

The key is to success in ACT Math is to get the student confident and comfortable with the format and the type of logic/strategy needed to answer the questions. Sometimes students know the concepts, but don't understand what is being asked of them in each problem. Others get nervous because they only get 1 minute for each question--there are 60 questions that must be answered in 60 minutes. My job will be to get her/him past the concern of time and content being asked in each problem. To do this, I teach efficient subject sessions, and follow those with practice problems, homework, and practice tests.

I appreciate the beauty of algebra, and express that appreciation to my students. I am dedicated to showing students how and why processes work, not just drilling them on what the processes are. As my student, he/she will learn 6 competencies that will help them achieve comfort and confidence in Algebra 1: 1) Interpret the structure of expressions 2) Write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems 3) Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials 4) Create equations that describe numbers or relationships 5) Solve equations and inequalities in one variable 6) Represent and solve equations and inequalities graphs

Geometry is a visual subject, and will require the creation of shapes and diagrams during the problem solving process. As a tutor, I encourage students to draw figures and analyze their shape, size and position . As my student, he/she will learn 6 competencies that will help them achieve comfort and confidence in Geometry: 1) Experiment with transformations in the plane 2) Understand congruence figures 3) Understand and apply theorems about circles 4) Explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems 5) Visualize relationships between two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects 6) Apply geometric concepts in modeling situation

I understand that pre-algebra is the foundation to all algebra concepts, and that the most be mastered before advancing to the next level. I am dedicated to showing students how and why processes work, not just drilling them on what the processes are. As my student, he/she will learn 7 competencies that will help them achieve comfort and confidence in Pre-Algebra: 1) New types of numbers such as integers, fractions, decimals and negative numbers 2) Factorization of natural numbers 3) Properties of operations such as associativity and distributivity 4) Simple (integer) roots and powers 5) Rules of evaluation of expressions, such as operator precedence and use of parentheses 6) Basics of equations, including rules for invariant manipulation of equations 7) Understanding of variable manipulation 8) Manipulation and arithmetic with the standard 4-quadrant Cartesian coordinate plane

As my student, he/she will learn 3 competencies that will help them achieve comfort and confidence in Trigonometry: 1)Extend the domain of trigonometric functions using the unit circle 2)Model periodic phenomena with trigonometric functions 3)Prove and apply trigonometric identities

Stephanie made a difference

Stephanie has made a dramatic difference in our son's high school experience. Math has been a struggle for him and it was starting to drag down his spirits as well as his other classes. Unfortunately it was not a topic that my wife or I were able to help him with so we turned to Stephanie. She caught him up and boosted his confidence in math. This extra confidence spilled into all his classes and before we knew it, all his grades started shooting up. She is a confident teacher who he relates well with and I would highly recommend her.
