Hi Everyone! My name is Elizabeth, and I would love to help you get ahead and excel as your tutor. I have been tutoring since 2014 and have worked one-on-one with hundreds of students. As an undergraduate at Duke University, I pursued advanced coursework in education. I am a big proponent of a constructivist approach to education, where students are pushed to play an active role in their learning. All my lessons focus on building off my student’s preexisting knowledge and encouraging their growth through various activities. Currently, I tutor AP Biology, college level biology, SAT, ACT, MCAT, college and medical school applications, and interview preparation.

My Qualifications:
I am an MD/Ph.D. student with 10 years of experience. I graduated from Duke University with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry and Education. Throughout my four years, I worked up to 20 hours a week at local schools and have continued to play an active role in science outreach efforts in my community. I scored in the 95th percentile on the MCAT and previously worked with a private SAT/ACT preparation company. I have completed all my medical school coursework and have taken both Step 1 and 2. I am now pursuing my PhD in cellular and molecular biology and love sharing my passion for science with all my students.

My Approach:
I really enjoy getting to know each of my students and helping them achieve their goals – whether it’s scoring 518+ on the MCAT or preparing a competitive application for top universities. Because of this, it is important to me that we discuss your goals, identify any weaknesses in study strategy/application materials, and come up with a plan together. My sessions are hands-on: your contributions to our lesson are just as important as my own.

Approved Subjects

ACT Science

ACT Science

I have helped many students excel on the SAT/ACT through Wyzant and as an instructor for a private test preparation company. Practice is extremely important for doing well on these exams, so from Day 1, my students and I going through problems together from official resources. Based on the students’ needs, I will adjust our goal for the lesson to address any issues with timing, narrowing down answers, or mathematical/grammatical concepts.
Biology

Biology

I am a Duke University alumni that completed my undergraduate degree in Biology. I am currently completing an MD/PhD in cellular and molecular biology and love increasing student's confidence in this subject. I work with student at all levels, ranging from elementary aged to college. Practice is important for doing well in Biology: for my younger students, we will work on IXL- an interactive learning platform- to learn through practice. For my older students, we work through materials you are completing in class, such as a practice exam for AP Biology or a recent problem set for college-level biology course.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have 10 years of tutoring experience and have mentored many students as they go on to apply to highly competitive colleges. I previously volunteered for the admissions office at Duke University and know what it takes to gain admission to top schools. My strategy focuses on finding my student's unique story for their application and working together to translate that story in a compelling manner through the Common App materials - the extracurricular descriptions, personal statements, and supplemental essays. For many students, I also provide assistance in creating a balance school list and identifying schools that will be a good fit for their goals.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

- Head Tutor for four years at several local schools, including two montessori elementary schools and one middle school. -Teacher's Assistant for four years at a Quaker Early school (Age 3-5) -Science Outreach Volunteer for 6+ years. I really love getting young students excited about science and math. This has been an ongoing engagement that I plan on continuing throughout graduate school.
MCAT

MCAT

I am an MD/PhD student with 10 years of tutoring experience. Two key aspects I focus on to help students achieve their goal score on the MCAT is a realistic, comprehensive study plan and formulating the right strategy for each question. I design study plans uniquely catered to each student and offer strategy-focused lessons where we go over practice problems. I scored in the 95th percentile on the MCAT.
Spanish

Spanish

I am a native Spanish speaker with 8+ years of tutoring experience. I help learners at all levels, ranging from elementary-aged to adults. For younger students, I will use IXL (an interactive learning platform) to reinforce concepts being taught in class. For students taking a college-level course, we can work on problem sets or prepare for oral examinations by having conversations in Spanish. For adult learners, we can focus on having conversations in different domains (speaking with a friend, eating at a restaurant, etc).
USMLE

USMLE

I am an MD/PhD student with 10+ years of tutoring experience. Two key components of doing well on USMLE Step 1, Step 2, and shelf exams are becoming proficient in question-solving strategies and having a thorough, efficient study plan; I help students with both of these component, offering sessions where we work on practice problems together or build a personalized study plan. I passed all my shelf exams and Step 1 (4 weeks dedicated), and received a 257 on Step 2 (3 weeks dedicated).
Writing

Writing

I have 10 years of tutoring experience and have mentored many students as they go on to apply to highly competitive colleges and medical schools. The Common Application and AMCAS is made up of several sections that all serve the same purpose – telling admission counselors the student’s story. Together, I work with my students to identify that story and tell it a compelling manner. I help with all stages of development, ranging from brainstorming to final polishing, and provide line-by-line editing.

Patient and Helpful Tutor

Elizabeth is one of the best tutors I have ever worked with (and I am a frequent wyzant customer)!!! I have my first medical school interview coming up and hired Elizabeth for a mock interview. I sent her my entire primary & secondary application, questions the school has been asked in the past, and information about the people who were interviewing me. During the mock interview, it was very obvious that Elizabeth actually took the time to familiarize herself with my application. She asked me questions that I did not provide for her, based on her experiences being interviewed. After the mock interview, she gave me thoughtful feedback. She explained how my two different interviewers would be most likely asking me different sorts of questions. She helped me ensure that my responses were consistent with my application. She gave me very constructive criticism and actual steps to follow for interview prep. Elizabeth was extremely kind and helpful. She genuinely cared about my success. I would highly recommend her!

Very encouraging and helpful tutor for Step 1!

Elizabeth has been an absolutely incredible tutor for my Step 1 journey. Honestly, I can't thank her enough! She helped me process my thoughts and really made everything click. She helped me make a study plan for every single day, which helped when I was feeling absolutely lost and unsure of what to do. But what I appreciated the most was how encouraging she was! It was exactly what I needed, especially when I was struggling and doubting myself. Her positivity and support made such a difference. I’d 10000% recommend her to anyone looking for some guidance and motivation, as well as insights on how to work the exam!

Very thoughtful and intelligent tutor!

She assisted my daughter in preparing for her scholarship interview. I was informed that Elizabeth thoroughly researched the scholarship program and familiarized herself with its details before the session. Her guidance greatly helped my daughter, who completed the interview confidently and successfully. I highly recommend her to anyone seeking a well-prepared and highly knowledgeable tutor.
