My name is Nora, I graduated from Earlham College with a double major in music and comparative languages and linguistics, focusing on Japanese. My name is Nora, I graduated from Earlham College with a double major in music and comparative languages and linguistics, focusing on Japanese. I've studied the language through a variety of methods from self-study to immersion to university courses and I am able to meet you where you are with the language you're learning and help take you where you want to go. As a fluent non-native speaker of Japanese (JLPT N1), I know the challenges and pitfalls learners are likely to encounter, and can help you approach and overcome them with confidence.

I will tailor my lesson plans to align with your personal goals. Whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced student, I am ready to help you. I have experience teaching Japanese in summer programs for students ages 7-18, (including classes of 8-10 students for high school credit), and teaching conversation classes at the college level, not to mention hundreds of hours of tutoring. As part of the JET program, I also taught English to Japanese kindergarten and elementary school students, and held weekly classes for adults as well. I am experienced in both immersive and non-immersive teaching methods and have taught from textbooks such as GENKI Tobira Gateway to Advanced Japanese.

As a fluent non-native speaker of Japanese, I have been teaching in various contexts for over four years. I have taught at summer immersion programs, in an elementary school, and as a private tutor for students of all ages. In these positions, I have learned several different approaches to language education, and learned to apply my knowledge of comparative linguistics to help my students learn.

My homeschooling teenage son had been experimenting with teaching himself Japanese for about a year and was looking for someone to help him study more formally.
