I earned a B.S. in chemistry (minor in mathematics) from the University of Florida and then graduated from the University of Michigan with a Masters and Ph.D. in biological chemistry. My postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland focused on the biochemical mechanism of a bacterial transcriptional activator. After more than 10 years of laboratory research, my projects have spanned topics ranging from organic synthesis to biochemistry, microbiology, and bacterial genetics in order to answer questions of biological interest.

I have several years of experience mentoring technicians, undergraduates, and graduate students in the laboratory. I have subsequently spent more than 5 years teaching a laboratory course on cellular & molecular biology and genetics to biology majors at Eastern Michigan University. This intense class involved teaching scientific concepts in combination with laboratory techniques, scientific writing skills, and lab calculations, for which I received excellent evaluations.

The one-on-one time spent working with students was the part of classroom teaching that I enjoyed most. It was particularly gratifying to have students come into my office completely confused about a concept and have them leave with a much better understanding of things where it “all makes sense now”.

I’m excited to have to opportunity to work with students individually through tutoring and I’d encourage anyone with questions to contact me to learn more about whether I may be able help and schedule a time to work together.

I earned a PhD in biological chemistry from the University of Michigan and performed postdoctoral research in a bacterial genetics lab at the University of Maryland. Much of my research has focused on understanding the biochemical mechanisms that regulate protein activity and thereby the effects on the bacterial cell. I have several years of experience mentoring technicians, undergraduates, and graduate students in the laboratory. I have subsequently spent more than 5 years teaching a writing-intensive laboratory course on cellular & molecular biology and genetics at Eastern Michigan University.

I received a top score on the AP chemistry exam in high school and then went on to earn a B.S. in chemistry with highest honors at the University of Florida. My undergraduate research involved organic synthesis with projects at both the University of Florida and the Université Louis Pasteur (Strasburg France). I then earned a PhD in biological chemistry from the University of Michigan and spent more than 5 years teaching at Eastern Michigan University with excellent student ratings. I also have several years of experience mentoring technicians, undergraduates, and graduate students in the laboratory.

Elise was fantastic!

She was well prepared to explain the chemistry topics I wanted to discuss, answered all my questions, and was very kind. Would highly recommend

Experienced Tutor

Elise was able to jump right in with my daughter and help her with her homework during the first session. Taking time to explain the work and logic so that she better understands it. My daughter felt a sense of relief after one session, she learned and asked to continue.

Lori, 3 lessons with Elise

very nice and patient

Had my first lesson with Elise and it went well! Looking forward to the next one, knows exactly how to make complicated things easy.

Knowledgable and patient and very helpful. Exceptional tutor

She found my trouble spots in understanding Chemistry and I raised my exam scores from F to A with the help of Elise! She is amazing and the results were outstanding.

certainly worth the money

My son started the year with an F on his first exam. Thanks to Elise’s help he was able to bring his grade to a B+ for the first semester. He’s now carrying a high A for the current semester. Highly recommend Elise.

Incredible biochemistry tutor

My son worked with Elise for his college biochemistry midterm and, even after just a few sessions so far, has learned a ton from Elise. She's very detailed, knowledgeable and presents the material in an easy way that is helped my son tremendously while gaining so much confidence!

Patient and Thorough

Dr. Elise helped me with a homework assignment in biochemistry. Before tackling the word problems, she gave a quick review of the concepts which I found most helpful! I was so happy to find Dr. Elise through Wyzant!

Amazing

Elise really helped my son to round out his knowledge base in biology to get him ready for an upcoming test. We would not hesitate to use her again. She certainly knew the information and explain things clearly.

Very Very Good with the material

Elsie and I had a great first lesson. Really breaks down the concepts and makes sure you can understand them. Provides lots of extra examples to drive home the point.

Knowledge and Kind

I’m so glad I came across Dr. Elise’s profile. After hours of trying to figure out a lab assignment, and even asking a different tutor, I was frustrated and ready to give up. However, Dr. Elise explained everything in 15 minutes! It all became so clear and I couldn’t believe how simple she made it. She showed me how to calculate an unknown from a standard curve generated from a Bradford assay, and helped me interpret an SDS-PAGE gel. She was also very kind which made me feel comfortable explaining what I was struggling with. Overall I’m more than satisfied with my experience and I highly recommend Dr. Elise
