I earned a B.S. in chemistry (minor in mathematics) from the University of Florida and then graduated from the University of Michigan with a Masters and Ph.D. in biological chemistry. My postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland focused on the biochemical mechanism of a bacterial transcriptional activator. After more than 10 years of laboratory research, my projects have spanned topics ranging from organic synthesis to biochemistry, microbiology, and bacterial genetics in order to answer questions of biological interest.

I have several years of experience mentoring technicians, undergraduates, and graduate students in the laboratory. I have subsequently spent more than 5 years teaching a laboratory course on cellular & molecular biology and genetics to biology majors at Eastern Michigan University. This intense class involved teaching scientific concepts in combination with laboratory techniques, scientific writing skills, and lab calculations, for which I received excellent evaluations.

The one-on-one time spent working with students was the part of classroom teaching that I enjoyed most. It was particularly gratifying to have students come into my office completely confused about a concept and have them leave with a much better understanding of things where it “all makes sense now”.

I’m excited to have to opportunity to work with students individually through tutoring and I’d encourage anyone with questions to contact me to learn more about whether I may be able help and schedule a time to work together.

Biochemistry

I earned a PhD in biological chemistry from the University of Michigan and performed postdoctoral research in protein biochemistry while working in a bacterial genetics lab at the University of Maryland. I have several years of experience mentoring technicians, undergraduates, and graduate students in the laboratory. I have subsequently spent more than 5 years teaching a writing-intensive laboratory course on cellular & molecular biology and genetics at Eastern Michigan University.
Biology

Biology

I earned a PhD in biological chemistry from the University of Michigan and performed postdoctoral research in a bacterial genetics lab at the University of Maryland. Much of my research has focused on understanding the biochemical mechanisms that regulate protein activity and thereby the effects on the bacterial cell. I have several years of experience mentoring technicians, undergraduates, and graduate students in the laboratory. I have subsequently spent more than 5 years teaching a writing-intensive laboratory course on cellular & molecular biology and genetics at Eastern Michigan University.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I received a top score on the AP chemistry exam in high school and then went on to earn a B.S. in chemistry with highest honors at the University of Florida. My undergraduate research involved organic synthesis with projects at both the University of Florida and the Université Louis Pasteur (Strasburg France). I then earned a PhD in biological chemistry from the University of Michigan and spent more than 5 years teaching at Eastern Michigan University with excellent student ratings. I also have several years of experience mentoring technicians, undergraduates, and graduate students in the laboratory.

Reviews

Knowledgeable

I reached out to Elise for help in Biochemistry. The session helped me understand the starting point and foundations to a really challenging subject. We went over some pathways, rate limiting steps, etc. Would highly recommend a lesson with Elise to anyone needing help!

Excellent session==a review of a scientific manuscript

Generation of a Humanized Mesonephros in Pigs from Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Chinese researchers have achieved a significant breakthrough by using pigs to cultivate early-stage kidneys comprised predominantly of human cells. This development edges us closer to the potential of producing organs in animals for human transplantation in the future. I had the privilege of reviewing this seminal paper with Elsie, a proficient academic in molecular biology. She adeptly broke down the intricate molecular and embryological techniques employed by the researchers. Elsie transformed complex diagrams into easily digestible insights. By the conclusion of our review, we both had a clear grasp of the study's findings and its profound implications. I'm deeply grateful for Elsie's invaluable contributions and eagerly anticipate our future sessions delving into other significant manuscripts.

Explains everything so I can understand

Elise helped me with some titration curve questions as well as some questions on cleaving amino acid chains, which I struggle with. She was able to break everything down in a way I can understand and greatly helped me with everything. I will DEFINITELY 100% be booking her more!

Experienced Tutor

Elise was able to jump right in with my daughter and help her with her homework during the first session. Taking time to explain the work and logic so that she better understands it. My daughter felt a sense of relief after one session, she learned and asked to continue.
