I earned a B.S. in chemistry (minor in mathematics) from the University of Florida and then graduated from the University of Michigan with a Masters and Ph.D. in biological chemistry. My postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland focused on the biochemical mechanism of a bacterial transcriptional activator. After more than 10 years of laboratory research, my projects have spanned topics ranging from organic synthesis to biochemistry, microbiology, and bacterial genetics in order to answer questions of biological interest.

I have several years of experience mentoring technicians, undergraduates, and graduate students in the laboratory. I have subsequently spent more than 5 years teaching a laboratory course on cellular & molecular biology and genetics to biology majors at Eastern Michigan University. This intense class involved teaching scientific concepts in combination with laboratory techniques, scientific writing skills, and lab calculations, for which I received excellent evaluations.

The one-on-one time spent working with students was the part of classroom teaching that I enjoyed most. It was particularly gratifying to have students come into my office completely confused about a concept and have them leave with a much better understanding of things where it “all makes sense now”.

I’m excited to have to opportunity to work with students individually through tutoring and I’d encourage anyone with questions to contact me to learn more about whether I may be able help and schedule a time to work together.

I earned a PhD in biological chemistry from the University of Michigan and performed postdoctoral research in a bacterial genetics lab at the University of Maryland. Much of my research has focused on understanding the biochemical mechanisms that regulate protein activity and thereby the effects on the bacterial cell. I have several years of experience mentoring technicians, undergraduates, and graduate students in the laboratory. I have subsequently spent more than 5 years teaching a writing-intensive laboratory course on cellular & molecular biology and genetics at Eastern Michigan University.

I received a top score on the AP chemistry exam in high school and then went on to earn a B.S. in chemistry with highest honors at the University of Florida. My undergraduate research involved organic synthesis with projects at both the University of Florida and the Université Louis Pasteur (Strasburg France). I then earned a PhD in biological chemistry from the University of Michigan and spent more than 5 years teaching at Eastern Michigan University with excellent student ratings. I also have several years of experience mentoring technicians, undergraduates, and graduate students in the laboratory.

Yes Elise!

Elise has been such a great help with my college Biochemistry class. She supplemented all my lecture material and presented her own resources to help answer the tons of questions I had in a very helpful way. She is also very patient and she wants to completely help you understand the material. Her help has helped me be successful so far in my class and definitely helped the way I approach exam questions! :) Thanks Elise!

Patient teacher

Elise was a patient teacher as we talked about topics I had answers for but didn’t understand deeply. I am looking forward to studying biochemistry now instead of dreading it!

She’s the best one!

Personally, I need to be able to ask questions when I don’t understand a topic, so it was difficult relying on textbooks and even online videos alone. Working with a tutor was definitely the right decision for me as I prepared for my exam. Elise was incredible. She’s patient and very encouraging. Her lessons are very simple to understand because she does an amazing job breaking down tough topics.

Excellent and Patient

Elsie taught me about oxidation numbers and the rules of electrochemistry and was really patient teaching it to me. She took her time to explain the process. I didn't understand much about electrochemistry before but I do understand now. She helped me practice these problems until I was confident i understood.

Awesome teacher

She is so very patient with me throughout my struggles with chemistry. She makes sure I do the problem for myself which not only helps me with my knowledge of the subject, but also aids in my confidence. She is really sweet and truly cares about the subject.
